I just drained the hydraulic oil from my FX32, replaced the filter, and cleaned the strainer. Ready to re-fill. What is the correct oil? When I got the tractor I topped it up with NAPA AW46, but I'm not sure if that is the correct oil. I see on the bucket that NAPA also sells AW32 and AW68.

Thanks,
Peter

Easy answer. J20C. Either one of the 2 below or universal that 'meets' the J20C specification, but never 'compatible with'.

Many oil companies have been sued in class action lawsuits in the past 5 years for saying compatible with or equivalent to J20C.

The NAPA listing for the AW46 no longer displays 'any' specifications to any bran anymore, thus it's not even close to recommend. Too many machines have had their systems destroyed do to false claims.

NAPA AW46 also states the following to keep you from filing a lawsuit.
Warranty: Standard : No Warranty, Expressed or Implied

Thank you! Very useful information.

A lot of the Yanmars in Japan that had powershift transmissions ran ATF, just regular mercon dextron.
That's what I ran in my FX42 & FX32 for many years, and that's what they arrived with inside the transmissions from japan.
In cold weather they never froze up and ATF has a lot of detergent to keep everything clean.
Plus if it ever leaks, you will see the red...

I've wondered if Powershift is nearly identical to the A/T in a Datsun or Toyota from back then, minus the torque converter.

And - is it ok to top up J20C with Mercon?

Interesting! Looks like the Mercon would be very expensive, so I think I'll stick with the J20C.

The dipstick for the hydraulic oil has four xxxx at the bottom end (about 3/4 inch), then another 3/4 inch to where the flat part ends.

Question: is the proper level between the xxxx and the top of the flat part? And do you check the level by inserting the dipstick in and out without screwing it in?

Yes, betwixt the two is the sweet spot. I typically screw it in out of habit to take a measurement. Others might have another idea why t let it rest on the first threads with no screwing for measurement.

After never finding answers in the manuals, my rule of thumb is push in a slip-in dipstick but I don't screw in a threaded dipstick, just rest it on the opening. And the fluid level should be somewhere within the x's.

My YM240 specifies 5 quarts of motor oil. Pouring in a 4 quart jug puts at the middle of the x's. [Added - Resting, not screwed in. So more full than the stick indicates]. It doesn't use any oil so now with the only use being running the backhoe, a very light application, I run 4 quarts and figure so long as it stays in the middle of the x's, I'm within Yanmar's oil quantity specs. The full 5 quarts would be better for any use that runs the engine hard.

[Edited after reading Ponytug's post].
