At sundown, I heard my neighbor and thought he was stacking lumber. Nope, he was shooting copperheads with rat shot. Killed these, 15' off his back deck and 2 more so far in the front yard. Tuesday morning, my wife killed one in the dog pen. Guess tomorrow, I will have to go on recon around the house, that is to many to ignore.

He sent me this photo a bit ago.

Not that I mind killing copperheads and rattlers but I'd be cautious posting pictures! There federally protected ! But there not protected at my house, but I'd still be careful with pictures.

I would take the fine over a copperhead, any day of the week!

Apparently not in Oklahoma.

" Nothing … shall prohibit the control of reptiles other than those listed as endangered or threatened, by landowners, lessees, or occupants of such land when such reptiles are creating a nuisance."

Not in Texas either and no listing as protection under federal law that I have found.

I was very much surprised the first time we went to Arizona (January 1990) to find that rattlesnakes were protected by law. Never heard of copperheads being protected. I've only seen one in the densely wooded park where I frequently take our little dog walking, but a local animal clinic had a sign out last year that they had snake bite anti-venom, and a couple of days ago the Denton Record Chronicle had a good picture of a live copperhead in a park at the north end of Lake Lewisville, just off U.S. 380k.

Yeah Bird, I have seen proposed legislation to protect Rattlesnakes and some states have some minor protections. I think some areas even have harsher restrictions for more endangered areas.

The Timber Rattler is the only snake that I know of in Texas that is protected but then I'm not looking for which snakes are protected. There were 9 copperhead snake bites in our county last year and there have been some more this year. Since my dog has learned the fine art of snake shaking and throwing, whenever she encounters a copperhead I run before she can throw it 30 feet in an unknown direction.

Bird--Years ago my Dad was mowing on his lawn tractor up on the north end of Lake Lewisville when he came upon a piece of lumber that he didn't want to mow over on his next pass. He reached down and picked it up and BAM got nailed by a Copperhead. Dad being a fairly cool customer(27 years on DPD) got off the tractor, killed the snake with the board, put the snake on the board and got in his truck and drove himself into Denton. He had the presence of mind to take off his wedding ring(he was cool) or he would have lost that finger to the swelling. So he's driving into Denton thinking I wonder when this venom will kick in.

He got to the hospital and walked into ER an plopped the board with the snake on it down on the counter and said, "That bit me."

His hand swelled up like a pumpkin and he was sick as a dog for a good while. They put the snake in formaldehyde and kept it on the counter in the ER for a long time.

So snakes scare me a lot and I'm always trying to thin the herd.
