Copper Head in the water

I was brush cutting today because I always seem to see a copper head or two around this time of year. I guess they come down close to the water to dine. I saw this one stretched out in the water as I was going by on the tractor. This one was about +or- 27" long. He even posed for a pic.

Apparently everyone has seen them in our stream except me. Which is probably good for the copperheads.

The lights and sirens go off when I see a copper head. I feel the same way about yellow jackets.

Wow! I always consider copperheads to be terrestrial rather than water snakes. Do you suppose they hide by the stream so they can capture mice/rodents that come to drink? Do you see them in the water often, or do you think the snake was taking refuge in the water since it saw you and the tractor? That's a great picture, and there's no mistaking the hourglass pattern.

They're everywhere in KY. They like rocky hillsides and streams from personal experience, but you'll see them in meadows away from water as well. I have see a number of them swimming in small streams up to small rivers (Green River, especially).

Fortunately, I've never seen any around the house in the four years we've lived there. But since we're surrounded by rocky hillsides and streams/creeks, I'd bet there out there. Watching. Plotting.
