Seems that you no longer need that choice in your life. :confused3:

Against the wishes of domestic producers and under threat of costly legal implications from both Canada and Mexico

A Montana-based cattle trade association called R-CALF USA was the most vocal proponent.

R-CALF released a statement after COOL was repealed that said, section 179 of the spending bill strips U.S. citizens of their right to know the origins of the beef and pork and ground beef and ground pork that hundreds of millions of consumers purchase at retail grocery stores for themselves and their families. Congress did this and the President concurred without any congressional debate, let alone public debate.

The WTO ruled that labeling was a non-tariff trade barrier, in violation of agreements signed by the US and other countries. The US government appealed this ruling several times over the past few years, but WTO ruled against them consistently.

having worked in the beef industry for over twenty years R-CALF and COOL were a big challenge to track every cow to the field it was born in. The way the industry works cattle move around from cow/calf operations to feeder to feedlot to auctions and can cross borders unknown to the processer.

Nothing stops a supplier from saying yes this cow was born in the USA.

It is strange we want to track a cow to the field it was born in but don't worry about who comes across the border.

What about seafood? Its amazing the variety of where it comes from when you look at the labels.

The change applies only to beef and pork (including ground beef and pork products) according to the links above.

Lets face it unless you locally KYFKYF (Know our Farmer...Know Your Food) you will never really know where or how your pre packaged food products will be raised, feed or processed.

Seafood and produce label the country of origin. I really don't understand how the WTO can rule against labeling meat products just like other foods. :confused3: We simply will not eat seafood from Asia anymore, if we have a choice. We have bought frozen food from Asia that when thawed smelled really bad. No way was it safe to eat. Unfortunately, if you eat seafood in a restaurant, you are almost certainly eating seafood from Asia. If one visits an Asian grocery store, you can find the large, already cooked shrimp that is used on Sushi nigri. My favorite, smoked/BBQ eel, is almost always from China. :(

I don't think all food from Asia is bad, we went to China and ate locally all over the place, and did not get sick at all. We ate in some pretty interesting places too.:laughing::laughing: Food was most excellent. But I don't really know how to tell if the food is good, especially seafood, when buying at home. My idea was to buy Japanese brands since I figured the Japanese are pretty serious about quality control, and even if the food was from China, they would be checking quality. Seems to have worked since we have not gotten sick. :D:D:D

To be fair, that was likely the fault of the retailer you bought it from. Most, if not all seafood like that is frozen almost immediately and shipped. Guess it could have happened during shipping as well, but the same could happen with domestic seafood. I try to only buy domestic as well, but it's no more guaranteed than Asian.
