I have the opportunity to get a John Deere 709 in great condition for next to nothing. The only bad part is it has a 1000rpm gratbox and I don't have a tractor with a 1000rpm pto. :( What would I have to do in order to convert it to 540? Could I juts buy two new gears and put in the gearbox or are the boxes completely different?

Several questions need answered before one can give a correct answer. Gear case appears to be the same for either speed depending on maker. Here's some "sample gears" so you'ld have an idea of cost.

Hope you're not gonna hook that bad boy up to the back of your TT45A! You'll have the easiest steering that you've ever experienced... hands free - for the most part - just push one brake or the other.

Of course, you probably won't want to tackle any hills, either.

I'll second no power steering required. I bought a used JD 709 a few months back that I had "sold new" way back when I worked for a JD dealer. When I had the center link attached on my Kubota M4900 with the mower raised the relief valve would make noise so I would use the mower attched as semi-mount only. This suited me as I hadn't decided how to make the mowers top part of hitch attach to my HF quick hitch.

You should need to change only one gear. It depends on the blade speed but I believe that the blade rpm is close to 1000.

Thanks for the info! This won't be used with my tt45. It will be used on a Ford 3930, which won't have to transport it but from the shed to the field 60 yards away, and its on mostly flat ground.

It will be a load for the 3930 if you hook up center link and raise the cutter. Did you ever find the brand of gearbox & machine serial #?

Again, thanks for the help! But the deal fell through, after getting the info I called the guy back to tell him I would buy it and he had a guy coming to look at it that evening... I wasn't quick enough. :(

If you don't mind what was the 709 priced at? I have one I'm going to sell and I'm curious at price. Thanks,Jim
