Converting 540 PTO to 1000

Newbie questions coming at ya...

I have a John Deere 5065e. The only PTO implement I use on it is a Bush Hog 2610L. Right now I am operating it with the 540 PTO. However, the Bush Hog is capable of handling both 540 PTO and 1000 PTO. Would there be any benefit to running it at 1000 PTO? I have a 1000 PTO shaft for my tractor as well as a 540.

I am cutting just grass with this Bush Hog. Would running 1000 PTO cause it to "bog down" easier in thick grass or would it go through it easier than at 540?

Farm equipment that I'm familiar that have capability of being operated at 540 or 1000 rpm BUT not both speeds without doing so changes to this machine. At either 540 or 1000 input pto speed blade tip speed of mower will remain close to the same "Feet Per Second". Advantage of 1000 rpm pto speed over 540 rpm on is less torque on pto driveline at the higher pto speed.

I've never saw an implement that could make the switch without mechanical changes either.

Secondly, 540 and 1000 shafts use different spline count. So you'll need a different shaft at the tractor end.

As mentioned, 1000 takes less torque and will improve your tractor's effectiveness.

Can you explain the process to convert the cutter?

I just went to Bush Hog's website and looked at your cutter. I think there is a misunderstanding.

When they say it can be 540 or 1000 they mean it can be built to run on either. But not both.

You own a 540 version.

Agreed!!! A 1000 rpm version will have different gear box ratios ( as TxJim said earlier) so the blade speed will be the same (or nearly the same). Do NOT adapt a 540 rpm unit (PTO shaft adapter) to run at 1000 rpm!!!
