I have a New Holland 269 twine baler that I am very happy with. However I have found that I need to switch from twine to wire bales. Can the 269 be easily converted to running wire or do I need to start looking for a different baler.

Thats pretty odd, wire tie is dead around here. Nobody will buy wire bales.

I'd bet you're better off selling and buying a wiretie baler.

How does plastic twine compare to wire in terms of strenght and weather resistance?

There are all types of plastic strengths, I've run the thick stuff and the thin stuff in my baler. The thick stuff is stronger than twine and lasts at least a year maybe 2 outside in the direct sun. If in the shade its just as strong 10 years old. Mice mostly leave it alone too.

We have a compost pile of mouldy bales. If you go back in a year you can drag a soaking wet half rotted bale out of the pile by the strings if you hook it with the forks while turning the pile.

Edit: The sisal twine is mush after a year in the compost. Nicer for going in the manure spreader.

If you really need wire you're best bet would be to find a baler that has wire tie on it all ready.
If you are looking to just have your bales hold up then switching to plastic is a viable option.
Personally I will not have plastic on my farm. I spend too much time digging the last guys crap out of my tillage equipment.

We are using the bales for kids hay bale mazes etc... and we are having to many break apart due to the weathering of the twine. Is plastic similiar to wire in durability?

It depends. Some is designed to biodegrade and others isn;t. I think the stuff that isn;t lasts a LONG time.

I just dug some stuff out of my baler pickup from when the previous owner had horses on the place over 6 years ago. Still just as good as when it got rolled on the round bale I'm sure.
