Has anyone had any experience in converting regular flashers to strobe. When driving down the road I see that public works trucks have their tail lights converted from traditional flashers to dual or quad strobe style blinking. On my JD4210 it has 1156 Bulbs in the light assemblies that are hooked to a traditional flasher & I'm hoping someone has done a conversion that would be not major complicated. Your Thoughts/Advise ??

See if you can find a user named LAGeorge. He did this to his New Holland and posted about it around a year ago. Pretty cool.

They really aren't converted from "standard" flashers to strobe flasher, but a additional hole is drilled into the housing and the strobe bulb is installed in that hole. The strobes are very expensive and they require some specialized wiring to complete the installation. If you are desiring to add strobe lights to your directionals, I suggest that you contact the local police department and ask them who they use to install the strobes in the police cars. Most of the smaller departments contract this type of work out to private contractors. I have also seen some strobe kits offered on eBay from time to time, but never learned enough about the different brands to know which are better than the next. If you decide that you want to pursue this further, send me a PM and I will ask someone that I know that is a installer for more details... Junk...

I was hoping that it would be as simple as changing the flasher unit & take out my existing bulbs and change them to LED Bulbs; it doesn't look that simple /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif. I was not planning adding minis to the light assemblies, just changing my existing amber lights. Honestly, if this is costly, it's really not that big a deal or worth it to me. I'm impressed with the local public works because I do believe that they are more "visible".

Decided to do some looking for you... Here is what I found... Strobe kits.... . I also gave some more thought to what you were referring to and I believe what you are calling strobes, are the new LED lights that have a special flasher hooked to them so they appear to be strobes. I have seen them on busses while I was in Florida last week. From the little that I learned about them, they also had a special transformer/flasher unit that operated them. The automotive lighting industry is changing so fast, there are new products coming out constantly and the items introduced in the past are becoming obsolete much more quickly. I don't believe that there is an inexpensive method to get strobes on your tractor, no matter which route you take.... additional lights already designed for strobe use (as was done by another TBN member) or adding the strobe light bulbs to your existing fixtures. Junk....

I bought a strobe add on kit from O'Reilly's. It was $10. It was simple enough. It is not very bright. At night it is of some use. For the price it was probably worth it , but nothing like the $100+ kits. Still it looks pretty neat at night.

Thanks for the digging. In my ignorance, I probably should have asked for comments/suggestions on systems similar to the buses that you saw in Florida.

the strobes that junkman linked to are the ones you are probably seeing. you can also go to www.galls.com and find similar units. these are the same units as used on police/fire/highway cars etc.....

i am a volunteer fireman and alot of the guys put them into their rear tailights in addition to their "blue light" on the dashboard. while technically you are only allowed your bluelight (in n.y. state) no one bothers you.

if you want something for the tractor wouldn't a yellow revolving light be alot simpler?
put it up on the rops(most come w/a magnetic mount) and you can take it down when not needed...

in my opinion the old revolving light is better than the strobes. when it is snowing the strobes make driving very dificult to see sometimes. but for the tractor that would not be much of an issue.
good luck

GoodGuy, we had a member named LAGEORGE who set up a great stobe system on his NH TC24D. I have not seen him post in months, but here is a link to a thread that details what he did. And it is pretty incredible.
