Hello gentlemen,

I found y'all on the net 3 or 4 months ago and have learned a lot lurking aorund. I look forward to learning a lot more and possibly contributing to the discussion.

I have a 231S with a Massey 232 FEL that was dealer installed when we bought the tractor. The dealer is now regrettably out of business. When they installed the FEL they used a 3 position diverter valve on the right side under the seat. Pointing forward is no hydraulics, up is 3PH and back is for the FEL. In order to use the FEL the position lever must be all the way back into the Constant Pumping sector. There is a stop on the position lever between Transport and Constant Pumping sectors.

I noticed the other day that the FEL would work when the position lever is not in constant pumping. It will work when it is about a third of the way down, well past the constant pumping stop. I plan on using a 3PH tandem disc quite a bit in the near future, and the manual says that the position lever should be in the fully up position but not in constant pumping.

My question is: Will it hurt the pump for it to be in constant pumping while I am discing? Also, how do I go about adjusting the position lever so that it is working properly? I plan on working on it before I use the disc again, and thought I would seek out a little advice.

Thanks in advance for any responses. Also, WilliamBos, how is the MF35 front pump project going? The crank mounted pump was an option from the dealer when we bought our 231S, but we didn't get it due to budgetary constraints. I am interested in this in the future though, and also possibly some rear remotes. Any pictures or info you can post would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again, and sorry for the long post.

Here's the "transport stop" adjustment for an MF165 according to I&T (who are known to make some mistakes). When I had a 165 it seemed to work like I&T said. Transport stop is FULL UP on the position control quadrant, but not into CONSTANT PUMPING.
1. With engine running, move position control into constant pumping. You should hear a little additional load on the engine and a change in hydraulic system sounds.
2. Scribe a line across lift arm cover and rockshaft.
3. Now move position control down, out of position control, and back up against the transport stop.
4. Check the scribed marks on rockshaft & lift arm cover. They should be separated by 1/16 - 1/8 "
5. If necessary, relocate the transport stop to obtain #4 above. Be sure to lock down the stop when finished.
I know that's not the MF model you have, but I think it likely to work the same.
Hope that's some help.

I've been a Massey owner for 36 years now, and SHOULD be able to give you a straight answer. That said, I'm baffled. I've got a manual in the shop (I'll be there later this afternoon) that is a Massey Ferguson hydraulics "tech manual" from 1974. It covers the basics of the system. Yours is a few years newer, but essentially, it's the same hydraulic system. I'll dig around and see what Massey has to say.

In the meantime, here's "Da MAN" on Masseys. Dean "Big Dean" Austin. They say no one knows EVERYTHING. Who ever said that originally never knew Dean.
