I am sure this has been done before but I have been unable to find just how to do it.

engine hoist 3 point hookup.png

click on above to see enlarged. (points to hook the 3 point shown in red)

The dirt under my tree no longer allows me to smoothly move my engine hoist around and the fold down legs always find something on my John Deere 318's in the way. Thinking of hooking it up to the 3 point on one of them would solve a couple of those problems.

Any suggestions of how to (or NOT) do this?

I did my hoist that way using long bolts and flat steel to straddle the tubing, with heavy steel braces to hold the 3 point lift pins then welded a cross brace across the lower hitch points between the pins. The top mount also straddles the tubing at an angle so that as it lifts, it tightens against the tubing instead of slipping.. (the bolt closest to the tractor is higher than the bolt furthest from the tractor).

I'm not near enough to take pics of my setup right now, but I'll try to take a couple today when I go to the farm. I hope my description is clear enough

This works very well for moving the hoist around and I've even used it to lift and move small loads while still attached to the tractor. (With the boom fully retracted and the lower legs pinned in the up position)

Edit - After looking at your picture closer, my lower pins are raised up 9 inches above the bottom tube and my top hitch is placed the same distance above them as the distance between the two points on my tractor.

I hope you will be able to post your pictures. I think I understand the top link and that is a great idea as the height could be adjusted. Not sure I got the lift pins? I have them turned 90 degrees in my mind.

built one for my sub-compact BX to lift wood for the log splitter.I knew that the sub-compact would not have much lift range. This will go to the ground to straight up in the air.Hope this helps!101_0183.JPG101_0184.JPG101_0185.JPG

I will have less lift even than you. But I think as long as I can clear the wheels from the ground I will be all right. Thank you for the pictures.

shadetree, sorry to to take so long getting back to you, but right after I took the pictures of mine, the phone fell out of my pocket into a large water puddle. Waiting on the thing to dry out and see if it works, then I'll post what I've got.
SCWoods looks great, but I used commonly available parts and didn't do anything other than drill and/or bolt to an existing engine hoist, so welding, no modifications to the hoist assembly, when it's not hooked up to the tractor, it can still be used as it came when new.

Darn - sorry about your phone. We've had a patch of rain so I haven't been able to do anything. I did notice with the boom in the down closed position the cylinder is so close to the main support that there is only room for very small bolts. My tractor (JD 318 Y & G) is much smaller and might not reach your pins (at 9 inches) even lifted all the way.

It appears the darned phone is shot, so I did a bit of looking around, here are two:

Modified engine crane - Yesterday's Tractors

http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/iseki/289452-3-pt-shop-crane.html

The one pic shows how they adapted the hoist to fit a quick hitch, but the basics are the same.

I know that somewhere on this forum, someone has better pictures since it's how I got the idea, just haven't been able to find it.

The OP for the thread on this forum, Ilikeutractor, (SP?) still posts here and he could give you a lot better information.

Thank you teg. I like the idea of the hydro cylinder.

Thank you Gunny. My ageing process is leaving me less and less able to find what I am looking for. Makes no difference, eye glasses, car keys, wrench but especially search functions.

It was beautiful here yesterday but my get up and go did not get up so I got nothing done.
