Just curious if anyone here has used any of the harbor freight diesel compression testers with their yanmars? Was looking around and the price is right but don't know if they will work. Any opinions? I know hoye sells one but it's 80 bucks now and darn that's alot for a one time use.

Haven't tried it, but if it doesn't work you have 90 days to return it

Looking at the user manuals they have a list but Yanmar is not included. Doesn't mean it won't work but might be hinting that way.

Wouldn't doubt you could use this adapter with the harbor freight set. COMPRESSION TESTER ADAPTER: Yanmar Tractor Parts

Mmm. Like the idea of the adapter. Apparently I haven't thoroughly gone through hoye site recently. I think the testers at HF were about 30 bucks so for a little more than 50 bucks a comp tester could be had. Not knocking hoye they are the best along with a few others on here and I infinitely owe them my appreciation but 50 is cheaper than 80.

Before you get too far into this project take a look at the thread I started back in 2010 describing my experience removing injectors.

In summary if the injectors have never been out in the past 30 years expect extreme difficulty getting them out, likely destroying them. Aaron from Hoye added his comments describing ripping injectors apart like a mad scientist's lab while they designed a useful injector removal tool.

I've come to the conclusion that listening to the starter crank the engine, under compression, is a sufficient compression test method considering the cost and difficulty of using a compression tester on these. Low compression on all cylinders will make it less likely to fire up during a cold start, that's a clear sign it needs overhaul. If cranking resistance sounds equal and it fires off in an acceptable time there's nothing more to test.

Well that's one of the reasons for pulling and checking. The thing has smoked gry/blue, had some blow by and used some oil since I got it and I am finally relegating myself to taking a dive in. Figured I'd check head and associated guts along with rings, after testing compression first. A long time ago I put up a thread with a video of it puffing and the general consensus was rings were suspect. It's just taken me a long time to get around to it. I can defiantly get the puller if I have to as a puller is cheaper than a broken injector but like most on here I hope it will last me another 35 years or so. I really appreciate everyone's help on here. This will be the first time for me breaking in to the motor and I'll have good back up from a mechanic friend.

I went back over some of your old threads, pictures, and videos. You need to save your compression tester money and put it towards new rings, etc. From what I have seen there is no reason to check compression, you are in need of an overhaul. Just my 2 cents.

Yeah that was what I was kinda planning on it. But then when I put everything back together at the end I will probably want to check it in checking my work. I won't need it immediately, not as much as I will the puller evidently. I plan on pulling head and ha ing that checked and worked as needed along with rings and bearings. Depending on how it looks may end up having crank checked as well
