At the risk of sounding real dumb (which in my case isnt that infrequent) what is the purpose of the com. release for? My tractor is a B 7200,,,,,,,thanks bedway

It's to assist starting in cold weather. I have a B6100 with about 2600 hrs. on it. It's kept inside in an unheated barn in upstate NY. I've never had to use the compression release. Just give the glow plugs time to heat up.

Ive never had a problem with mine starting, even in cold weather. I was just curious what the funtion of the compression release was. Maybe its the step by step use of it and the benifit of its use im unclear about. Thinking out loud here,,,,,,,you have to have compression for the engine to start,,so DUH,,how does it help,,,bedway

OK pull the compression release> crank engine> this allows the the starter to spin up to full speed with minimal load on it> release the compression release the starter is running at full speed and the inertia of the moving engine parts pistons, crank and flywheel help to overcome compression and it starts. It is sorta like driving a nail with a hammer. You can't push the nail with the hammer but if if you get it moving (swing it) it will drive the nail. Some engines also use it for stopping the engine but Kubota does not reccommend this, and wants you to use the fuel cut off (switch).

On the B6000 I had back in the '70s, I used the decomp several ways. It got me back "home" when I had a low battery. Sometimes in winter, it was the difference between start and no-start. And once, I used it to shut down a runaway engine when I rolled the tractor (story in another thread).

Kubota diesel technology has come a long way from those B6000 days. Along the way, the decomp knob disappeared. From some responses in this thread, sounds like it could have been eliminated earlier...:)

I never use it on my B6100 but hear it's a good way to get the fluids moving before starting the engine.

It is handy if you run out of fuel and have to crank the engine for a long time to get pressure built back up in the fuel system.
