As the title stated, I just completed a full tune-up on the S650G. It started right up after installing new Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, coil & condenser. All parts from Napa based on info collected from this forum and S650G website. The wires were the solid core, and the coil says "external resistor required".

It ran great for about 30 minutes, now its starting to sputter and lose power (mostly under load)... My primary question is about the coil needing an external resistor. Do the original coils have an internal resister? would a coil with no resistor burn through the points, plugs?

My tractor done same thing after doing all that I had to set points closer because my distributor was so loose Grab distributor shaft were your rotor bug set see if you have lots of play if so you need a new one but after moving my points closer mine runs great mine were 22 thou moved them to 10 thou

Thanks... I set them at .018 per the book... The distributor is nice and snug, and the rotor was actually almost too tight on the shaft I had to tap it on..... I'll check the points in the am and might close them up just a smidge.... I'm gonna keep doing some homework on the coil/resistor and see if that could be causing any of the issue

The original coil has no resistor. I had a similar problem this past summer and it turned out to be the voltage regulator was corroded inside and not repairable. Bought a new solid state regulator from these guys: 301 Moved Permanently. Part # IM952
Tractorbynet put a link in place of the web address but it works. The name is alternator parts dot com.

So after a little work, it turns out the coil DOES need the resister. the coil was way too "hot" without and was burning up the points and plugs. Resister added has been added, points and plugs cleaned and regaped... running like a champ. I have run it for about 4-5 hours and no issues..... other than i just blew out the hydraulic pump :-(
