Got a 28HP commercial briggs in a Ferris zero turn.
It was leaking oil from the sump gasket. Got that all replaced.
On initial startup, the engine revved to the moon.
Shut it down quick, and proceeded to attempt to adjust the governer
I loosened the governor arm on the shaft so I could spin the shaft and adjust it all but, the shaft will not spin.
It spun fine on the bench before reinstalling the motor.
Did the governor scatter and now I need to pull the motor and open it up?

The governor shaft when the engine is assembled doesn't turn more than about 1/16-1/8 of a turn. Move the throttle shaft on the carb and determine which direction the governor shaft turns when the throttle is moved from idle to full throttle. Then while holding the throttle at full throttle turn the shaft in the same direction as it rotated when going from idle to full throttle and then while holding the shaft steady tighten the retaining bolt snugly.

The governor blew up. Found anew one and adjusted it correctly. Got it cutting grass again.

That is so sad. I hope there was no other damage done during the high revving moment.

That is a lot of work, but now you are an expert on disassembling and reassembling the Commercial Briggs V-twin
