Come-A-Long (Brand Recommendation)

After 15 years, my cheap, no-name brand come-a-long has finally bit the dust. I need a new one.

My one vice is that I like to buy good quality tools and I don't mind spending the money.

So, what brands do you guys recommend and where do I go shopping? So far, I've only checked out the ones at TSC.

These are pretty darned good and well-made for an inexpensive come along: MAASDAM

Of course, if money is no object for a tool that will stand up to lots of abuse these are tops. They are popular with utility companies for pulling cable (telephone & power line)

I've had a More Power Puller for +40 years and dread using it because it usually means I've buried my vehicle - but it'll get you out as long as there's something to grab onto. Pretty well built hand winch. Check Forestry Suppliers - link attached.

Great thread--I'm looking to buy my first comealong to put up some barbwire fence. I don't think I need an industrial grade tool, just something to stretch some wire. Is the TSC a good general purpose tool, or is there another brand that's not expensive, but good quality?

It helps tremendously to go to a retailer that has the cheap and the expensive side by side so you can see the corners cut. I have always just bought the 2-ton 20$ models at Walmart. I have only gone through 3 of them in 10 years and that includes strenuous activities like pulling bulldozer tracks up and onto the machine and hoisting engines out of engine bays. The cheapies will last a good long time so long as you keep the cable lubed and don't lever on parts of the comealong not meant to be levered on.

I ordered a More Power Puller yesterday. The price seems to be the same from dealer to dealer, but I did find a place that had free shipping - which is a good thing since it weighs 27 pounds. I got the 2 ton with a 30' wire rope. I get the feeling, I may someday end up with a second one made from a lighter weight material.

Now please excuse me as I have to go start lifting weights again to get ready to use it.
