My 1947 8N Does not like to start when it is cold (blow 35 deg) are they cold blooded? Got a carb rebuild kit hope it helps, I got the 8n a couple of months ago, runs just fine when i get it started. Any thoughts besides carb?
Thanks Jim

Took apart carb to find there was only one screw holding the choke plate in place so it was off center an not closing all the way i dont have anthing like that here so off to town. Hope that was all it was, but going to rebuild carb any ways.

It sounds like you probably found it. A bad carb will do it every time.

My Dad's old Ford (8N) didn't like cold starts for about a month before the head gasket went. Our guess, once antifreeze started showing up in the oil and because replacing the head gasket fixed the cold start problem too, is that the compression was down until the engine warmed up and everything expanded.

Also, make sure the little spring loaded flapper is still on the choke plate.

Flaper was there but was not loaded, where does the spring go?
Tractor started right up after rebuild.

spring holds a flap closed, but does allow the flap to open to allow some air in during full choke.

go ahead and clean and gap the plugs or repalce if fouled, and clean and regap points while you are at it. clean bat terminals and electrical connections at key switch and ballast resistor.. goes a long way..

rad an pan heaters never hurt. also a trickle charger on the battery helps. set em up on a timer to go off 1-2 hr before you need to use her int hat cold weather.. that way the battery is topped off, coolant is warmed, and oil is warmed. could do another pan heater on the hyd sump so the hyds work faster...
