I have a new TN65 , and was wondering about the cold start button, How and when should I use it, What temperature range should I use it?

Does the owner's manual say anything about this? I would assume that it heats glow plugs in the cylinders or something like that.

These are Direct Injection diesels, that don't use glow plugs...{like an IDI uses...}

Most newer DI diesels use a heating element in the air intake, when turned on will "preheat the air" for easier cold weather starts, called thermostart.

On the John Deere utility tractors, you depress the ignition switch{like pressing a button switch} and hold for up to 30 seconds {depending on ambient air temperature}... then turn the key and vrooooooooooommmm... you're up and running quick. I imagine this NH "cold button" does something similar. Robert of NY and a few others have this great tractor TN65 and will eventually chime in and explain/correct the right answer... /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

A neighbor has an old Oliver that I've driven a lot with the cold start system that John Miller described; the heating is in the air intake.

Your right about what it does John, I would hold the button for a minimum of 30 seconds. If it is extremly cold then I would hold it for about 45 seconds. Once it starts it will sound jumpy till it warms up which takes about a minute or two then it smooths out. Just wait till the machine is good and warm before you work it too hard so that the fluids have a chance to warm up. I have to keep mine outside till I get a chance to build our pole barn and last year we had some fairly cool days and I had no problem starting. Also make sure you get some diesel supplement added to your fuel if you get tempertures in the freezing area.
