This is the first winter for me and my B6000E, and so far it has started reasonably well in the mid 20s with LONG glow plug times. My machine has a compression release knob, and I am looking for advise on how best to use it. Should I pull it out while cranking, and push it in just before she catches? Or leave it open as it fires up....

Dont want to do any damage to the little antique :)

It fires with it out? I don't think so, or at least I don't think it should.

I believe the way you're supposed to use it is to pull it out and turn the engine over. Keep turning until the engine stops picking up speed and then push it in.
My B5100E's battery wasn't very strong and I found it to be quite a chore to get the thing started in winter. Mine was a 3 step process:
1) heat the glow plugs for about a minute (as per instructions on the dash).
2) Let the key go back to "rest" for 20 seconds.
3) Heat the glow plugs again briefly, like 5 seconds and then try to start it.
If I failed on the first attempt, that meant booster cables and my pick-up truck/w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif.
