I seem to have a little noise on my new 4720
I hear it when the clutch is pushed all the way down... PTO
I dont remember this noise on my 3820.
Anyone else have a little noise ?

Gene, nobody has had an input on this one....so about the only thing I could think to do would be to try some other 4720s out at a dealer and find out how they act/sound. It may just be the norm? That may not be real practical if you are a long way from your dealer and don't have time to travel. I wouldn't hesitate to go back to my dealer and try some others out to compare.....of course while I'm there I'd tweak him up some by saying " I knew I should have bought green"....that always gets them fired up....unless by the strange coincidence they are also a jd dealer....in which case they'll go into a trading mode.

The machine should make a clicking noise if you have a pto driven implimant on, and if the implimant is "spun up", and then you mash the clutch. This noise is normal and good.

HOWEVER--- If you here the noise every time you mash the clutch, wheather or not the pto is engaged, then you have an issue that sould be addressed by the dealer.

Thanks for the replys guy's, whats with my luck?
I've only run this tractor about 1/2 hour, maybe drove it 1/2 mile.
Havent done anything with it other than wash and yes wax it.
It was deliverd with 3.5 hours on the hr meter.
Man you would think if the dealer had run it 3.5 hr's they
would have noticed the noise?
It kinda sounds like a bad throw-out bearing but only when
fully compressed.
My guess is though it has to do with the PTO disengagement.
I wonder it it has to be split in 1/2 to be checked out?
I havent had time to look into it 7-12's makes time tight!
And yes my dealer is 100 miles oneway /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Hmmm..JD is 5 miles up the road.
I havent even pulled the cover off the PTO shaft to see if it spins.
HopefulyI can find the problem and fix it myself?

Ditto on what Virgil said. If it is the black hard plastic cover that bolts on, it should BE off. If you have to remove it, be sure to replace the bolts snugly or your pto seal will eventually leak.

Virgil here's a dumb question along the same lines.

My tractor came with the cover on...I dont use PTO (atleast not yet) can the cover stay on or should it be off regardless?

I have always put the cover back on when not using the PTO to keep some of the dirt, grass and grime off of the PTO shaft since it is covered with a layer of grease.

On page 47 of the Century manual it says:
"Keep the PTO shaft cover in place at all times. Replace the PTO shaft cap when PTO is not in use."

Evasive1 has the correct answer

I have found that they usually get lost or thrown away after removal.

It's a 10mm wrench that removes that little plastic cover.

Really? You take the bolts outa the PTO end plate, pulll the shaft cover, then put the bolts back, and then reverse this everytime you remove a PTO driven implement?

I just make sure that I keep a coating of grease on the shaft, and wipe it off if it gets dirty.

It is only 2 bolts and takes less than a minute to pull them to take the plastic cover on or off.

Far less time than having to, find a rag, wipe off all the crud that has accumulated, find some grease or wd40 to put on it, clean the grease off of my hands, Don't take the time to find something to clean my hands so I wipe it on my pants, throw pants in laundry, sleep on couch next 3 days for getting grease on all the other "good clothes".

Much easier for me to just take off the cover those 5 or 6 times a year I use the brushhog /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I took delivery of my new Century 2535 with FEL Friday. I found the PTO cover in the tool box behind the seat. The guy from the dealer said that it was just for shipping to keep it from getting bunged up. I read in the manual last night that it should be kept on. I could only find one bolt in the toolbox.

Good answer Evasive 1

Does anyone else out there use that "antisieze" stuff on the chain checks and top link? You know, that silver stuff that you might as well put some on the steering, wheel, stick shifts, shirt, bla, bla, bla... it gets everywhere but it's good stuff.

yeah Virgil, its great stuff..use it on everything..however two things to remember

1) it does get friggin everywhere!!

2) on critical applications involving torque you have to backoff your foot/lbs quite a ways atleast 10%+ or more,,so slippery it'll snap bolts.

Hi I'm sorry that you might be having a problem. I guess it all depends on what kind of noise that you hear that would set off any alarms. Is it a rough sounding noise? typical through-out bearing kind of noise? grinding noise? or is it a "I can just hear it" kind of noise? I believe that you have a dual clutch assembly. One disk for drive and one disc for pto, might be a problem with the assembly. If its a "I can just hear it" kind of noise, you might want to call your dealer and express your concerns and ask them if its something you should worry about? Document your call and establish a history with the dealers advice and since your tra'tor has a few hours on it, you might want to document your call and run it and see if the noise gets worse or goes away. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
