Our dogs all hate it, despite the fact that we start clipping nails when they're about a week old, keep it up, and never hurt them. They just don't like having bits taken off.
Serious obedience helps. We had to have a strong talking to our old *****, but she comes and rolls over to have them clipped, but it's obvious she doesn't like it.
Use good trimmers. I like the shear type rather then the gillotine. They're sharper and the blades make up better. Don't cut too much. If they have trtee-climbing claws, cut them several times every few days until they're under control. That seems to make the quick recede.
