I recently bought a CK20 Manual Transmission with under 300hrs. Yesterday I was attempting to pull a heavy load in gravel. I had 4wd engaged and as the wheels spun in the gravel the tractor produced a clicking sound. It wasn't a grind but I guess could almost sound like that. All 4 wheels were engaged and things were functioning properly. Is this typical or is something going on? I do find that sometimes 4wd is difficult to engage and I have to move the tractor to get the lever to engage. Any thoughts on either issue would be great.

engaging 4wd on any tractor can be hard...gears binding...try steering all way left then right while gently pressuring to put into 4wd, while stopped. somewhere along the way binding will stop and slip easily into 4wd.

Maybe you have a planetary drive that's going on that front end

Have you checked the front end fluid? Might want to drain it to see if there is any metal present? Did you buy from a dealer or private sale?

Well I took it out to test it again today. The trick with turning the wheel to assist in engaging helped big time! Gently applied pressure and turned the wheel and every time it slid right in to 4wd. I tried to make the sound again but I couldn't recreate it. I was in dirt/mud this time. Had all wheels spinning and even had to use the diff lock and nothing. Not sure if it was something about the gravel or if It is possible I was not fully engaged last time. If it happens again I'll have to take a look at the front end oil. That was a good thought. I am guessing it's either something with pulling in gravel that makes the tractor exhibit the issue or I was not fully engaged?

I usually engage/disengage the 4 WD while I'm moving on my DK 35, goes in/out very easy that way.
Just don't do while spinning .
If the click sound went away, I'm betting it was not fully engaged
