cleaning wood stove \"glass\"

I got a new fancy schmancy Blaze King stove, and am on the one hand enjoying the large window on it, but having issues with trying to get the ceramic glass clean.

The thin spray stuff just won't cut it. Literally. I noticed that If I do it after a fire and the "glass" is still pretty warm that the creosote is looser and easier to remove. Some of the crud is on pretty good though, and my wife is pretty sensitive to the fumes - nevermind we have a 9 week old baby.

What can I use on the door glass that really works but won't damage my significant stove investment?

I know on my Vermont Casting gas fireplace the glass is to be cleaned only with a damp cloth with kitchen soap...

Westonium,
I've never cleaned stove glass but have read repeatedly that the best think to use is a little fine ashes on a damp cloth. You might want to research this suggestion before you try it.

Re: cleaning wood stove \"glass\"

I almost made a serious mistake when I installed our woodstove years ago. I talked to so many people that had trouble cleaning the window that I ALMOST bought one without a window. I'm sure glad I didn't as the view of fire and coals is second only to the extra heat that radiates through that glass.

Cleaning has been VERY easy, once I learned how. I lift the door off its pins and carry it just outside the back door. I give the glazing a light spray of EasyOff Oven Cleaner (the regular stuff, NOT the "fume-free" which doesn't work well in this application). I then walk back into the house, grab 3 paper towels and the can of glass cleaner. By the time I've returned to the woodstove door, it's ready to be wiped off with the first two towels. The third one cleans the last of any residue using glass cleaner.

Then I carry the door back in and put it back on its pins. Altogether it's about a 6 or 7 minute job once or twice a week.

Pretty easy, no fumes in the house and spotlessly clean. I do my best to NOT throttle the stove down all the way, as that 'smokes' up the glass more quickly, but many times we gotta close it down anyway to get it to last most of the night and then I'll just need to clean it again.

Re: cleaning wood stove \"glass\"

The best method seems to be "self cleaning". Remove what you can with damp cloth. Then get some small well dried wood & have a nice hot fire - it will burn off.

I've used Stoner's invisable glass cleaner on mine with no ill effects - doesn't do a great job compared to "self clean"

I've just been using a wet sponge on ours now for the last twenty years or so, works great.

I don't know how well it would work on your application, but for my glass top kitchen stove, I use Cerama brite which you can get at Lowes and it does an excellent job cleaning it and my wife loves to cook things over on the stove top and let them burn fast.

Be sure NOT to use anything abrasive like steel wool or an abrasive cleaner that would abrade the quartz-mica glass and cause it to break.

bingo...the glass might be clean but you can't see the fire with all the scratches! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
