We got about 5 inches of rain last week and it is finally drying up enough to clean up. I had to cut down 2 of my big pecan trees, so I am cutting them up for firewood. boy, that pecan is hard to split.I borrowed a friends home made splitter. It has a 5 hp Briggs with a small pump and a big cylinder. Slow but powerful.

You might need a little bigger cordwood wagon on the job. SteveV

jim,
I know nothing about pecan tree,so what kind of wood is it other than hard to split..like elm also whats the heat value..like hardwood..are they a fast growing tree?

Hope your not going to use the wagon in the sand box to haul the split wood. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Steve, the way natural gas prices are going up, I will need all the firewood I can get next winter!

Thomas, pecan is a hardwood and if let dry this summer will be about the same as oak for heat value, after seasoning out it really burns well. It sparks and crackles a lot though.

Jim, I'm going to guess that you've used pecan for firewood in the past and are familiar with it; nothing wrong with it; I have one neighbor who uses it almost exclusively because he has so much of it; HOWEVER, don't keep it too long. Old, thoroughly dried pecan wood was the worst wood for popping and throwing sparks that I ever put in a fireplace. Hope you have a good screen in the front of the fireplace and a spark arresting cap on top of the chimney.

Well, you answered that before I could get it entered./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Looks like you've got plenty more firewood in vertical storage Jim /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

That was a pretty good sized pecan tree. Any timber value to pecan?

Not easy to focus on work when you've got that nifty slide set and sandbox nearby, eh, Jim? /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

That's one nice hunk o' property you've got there. My own property is so hilly it's kind of nice to look at your picts and get a whole different perspective. I'll bet you haven't invested too heavily in tiltmeters, have you? /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

BTW - I can't see the forest -- probably 'cuz of the trees. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

Jim,

Thanks for the reminder. I've just about forgotten what bare ground looks like. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif Still have better than a foot of snow on the ground. Too bad about the storm damage though.

Harv, the grand kids "yard monkeys" love the sandbox and slide.
Rob. There is not much pecan cut for industrial use around here, however, it is used to make fine furniture.
Thomas, it was 50 deg here today and the frogs were really singing. As my dad used to say, "the spring frogs are whistling"

in the photo wood2 jpg the big white tank you see in the background is a grain tank owned by Bunge Corp. it is sitting on the bank of White River. They ship a lot of grain down river to greeneville, Ms. I am about 1/4 mile from the river

What is all the green stuff on the ground? Is that grass? The world up around the Great Lakes is still white, with a bit of brown showing through. That green stuff is encouraging.
