good point justman. this particular stump was a pine tree one that came down a while ago and was the only one in a paddock i are resting at the moment so it made sense to do it now given i can sew some new pasture and get some growth before the spring. cant think there would be much joy in trying to pull half a dozen gum stumps out though.

your advice on lining your ducks up applies as well re fence posts, get a combination auger/rammer in and bang em all in at once. what are the ground conditions like down there in Texas? i stayed with a friend who moved over to austin a few years back and i know it gets pretty hot down that way.

Koshari, our ground conditions vary from location to location. We have clay, sand, a mix, and then something we call caliche(?) which is a mix of sand and rock. Most of San Antonio is sand and rock in the North West section, sandy soil in the central section, and then very sandy soil and clay in the Southern sections. I live South of town, so my soil is very sandy. I can run a water hose about 20 feet in the ground just on water pressure.

I think hot is an understatement. We consistently have days in a row where it's over 100 and it doesn't rain. We've had quite a bit of rain this year, but it's slacked off a bit of late to where everything is getting the typical Summer brown color (dead). It'll be this way until we get a hurricane in the Gulf or Fall comes and brings cooler weather.
