CK30HST newbie reality check

I've got a CK30HST with a Woods LC102/BH80x filled R4 tires (front and rear). My main task is moving a bunch of landscaping. (small trees and large shrubs) Using a combination of backhoe/ripper and a dirt works tree shovel.

Dirtworks Tree Shovel (Spade Nose): Bobcat Skid Steer Attachment or Tractor Attachment

This past weekend I was operating in 4WD on fairly flat soft, but not wet ground with backhoe attached. I was working on a 7 foot camellia and While driving the tree shovel in the tractor just sort of bogged down. No wheel spin.

Is this expected with filled R4s and a 1000 lbs plus backhoe?

Is there a seperate relief valve for the hydro tranny?

I did eventually get the camellia out without too much trouble, but I am left wondering if I should have gotten a CK35?

This is my first tractor. Is there an easy way to check to see if the hydro tranny/engine are outputting what they should be?

Hello Tim, i have the same setup as you basically. I would not have loaded the tires, the ck30 is plenty heavy with the 80x on the back for counter balance..You have a 30hp machine pushing 6000lbs. You said this was your first tractor, have you used hst before? Make sure your in low gear and keep the rpms up high (2600rpms) for extra power when digging with the loader. I have a hard time stalling my machine when doing just that. It may be possible your relief needs adjusting, perhaps a dealer will chime in on that.. How do you like your Lc102 by the way.. Do you have any pics of it? Matt

What gear range were you doing your work in?
You should have been max throttle and in medium range.

Ummm... I was in low range. Was I supposed to read the manual ?

At first I was running about 2000 rpms and it stalled so I cranked it up to 2600 rpms.

I like the LC102 although I have not done any dirt moving with it yet. (just the tree shovel).

I went with the filled tires because I have some 15-20 deg+ slopes.

Alot of folks using the hst for the first time will try to apply more pedal expecting more power when its actually just the opposite, less is more. The extra power is in the hand throttle in rpms. I dont blame you for loading your tires if you have alot of 20 degree slopes to traverse. Do you plan on keeping the backhoe on most of the time?

Yes, come to think of it I was pushing the pedal all the way down. I will try letting up some while still at full throttle.

BTW is 2600 rpms like the red line or can you exceed this for short periods... where is that manual??

I do need to have the backhoe on since the tree shovel does not do all I need by itself. I use the ripper to work around the tree/shrub then scoop it up with the shovel.

Being a new machine you want to probably vary your rpms a bit until the machine is broken in. From there these diesels can be run wide open and it wont hurt a thing..

Try your lowest gear when moving around your work site.... I only use medium and high range when moving some distance. Yes, just barely press on the pedal.... you should be able to creep forward/reverse extremely slow... yet with the entire power of your RPMs being applied to each wheel. The more you press, is kind of like shifting to a higher gear... you go faster but bog down easier. With experience, you will learn exactly what to do ... and love the HST transmission.

I have a different machine but, similar weight with a little less power. it will spin 'em in mid-range if it meets an immovable object. I'll bet yours will too. As said, pedal modulation is key. I use mid-range for most everything, less shifting and it has a good speed/power ratio.
