CK30 stalled while mowing and now won't start. Advice, please!

Hi folks:

CK30 - 660 hours. I was mowing pretty heavy with a Woods 7200 this afternoon. I had been working for about an hour. Backing up on a bank the mower dug into some dirt and the tractor stalled. It would not restart.

I disengaged the PTO shaft from the mower. The PTO shaft on the tractor rotates freely.

The ignition switch turns, the dash lights up and I hear a click, but the starter and engine do not turn.

The battery seems fine, all the lights come on.

I've not had any previous problems starting. Can you help a brother out with some advice how to trouble shoot this issue.

Did you shut off your PTO switch? It will lock-out the starter if it's in on position.

I did not when I tried to start it right away. I just put it in neutral (I forgot to mention that it's a gear drive, not hydro).

I just went out and cycled the PTO lever into low gear, neutral, high gear neutral and tried to start it once more.

No joy, same symptom as before.

Other thoughts? Is the PTO switch electric? Is there a PTO relay that might have blown?

I would recommend going out to it and;
transmissions in Neutral,
PTO switch off,
shuttle in Neutral,
clutch pushed down,
try the starter;
if it starts great.
If it doesn't start,
turn on the lights,
do they work?
try the starter with the lights on,
do the lights dim or go out?
Yes, the battery is low.
No,the starter still has an interlock active or the solenoid or starter has failed.

Do you feel comfortable jumping the solenoid?

If you feel comfortable do you have someone to help you tow start in?

Do you have a seat safety switch that might be broken or disconnected? Perhaps it was pulled loose in the tall brush. I know I've had starting problems on a NH that were eventually traced back to bad contact on seat switch.

If it has a safety switch on the seat then it would keep it from starting. My newer Ck4010 doesn't have a seat switch so if yours doesn't then LouNY gave you some solid advice and would go down that path

Just for grins, shoot some WD40 in the key hole and cycle the key switch a few times. Those older CH30s are pretty simple: it's either the key switch, the start relay, or the clutch safety switch. The relay is a common automotive relay, available at Autozone. OReilly, etc.

You are referring to the 'range' lever when you say L, M, High. The PTO should be engaged by a switch on the dash, which is electric. IT must be in OFF position for the tractor to start, also neutral on the range selector, ( NOT in gear), foot on clutch, etc.
Kiotis dont have neutral seat switches.

Folks, thanks for all of the replies.

Coyote machine: My '08 CK30 doesn't have a PTO switch on the dash. Just a mechanical lever with three positions: low/neutral/high.

I have a pdf set of the shop manuals and have located the clutch safety switch on the wiring diagram. Any ideas where it is on the tractor?

Ritcheyvs: I'll try some WD 40 in the ignition switch. I think the ignition relay is on the firewall.

I'll check these things after church in the morning.

I'm assuming you have put the pto lever in neutral, but is the safety switch still activated or damaged? May have broken something in the pto if it's engaged but rotating freely. It's not rocket science and I'm sure you've had the pto in and out many times. The only time I ever had a problem was when I left my pto engaged, flipped the switch and away it went!
