Tractor is out of warranty and it seems like 4wd will not work. Front drive shaft is putting out power but front wheels only spin lazily and can be stopped with your hand when elevated. Any idea what the problem is?
Thanks for any help

With the front wheels raised, 4WD engaged, and engine stopped, turn one front wheel by hand. What does the other front wheel do? Turn on opposite direction? Nothing?

I'd guess you have stripped splines or a disengaged gear in the front end. I think you need to experiment to locate the problem vs tearing apart the front end at random. If you have a service manual you can study the front axle chapter to get a picture what's inside.

Update. With front end raised when I spin the front wheels the other will spin lazily. I had someone hold one wheel for me and I can spin the other wheel with no effect on held wheel. What should I look at tearing out first?
As well I am fairly handy but this is my first tractor. How big a job is this?
Thanks for any help.

Steve,

I am in the same boat you are with the 4wd, my next step is going to be to take the front cover( for lack of the the correct term) off and look in with it on jack stands and see what is not turning correctly. I have the documentation that walks you trough this (thanks to another forum member). Let me know if you need it. It will probably be a few weeks before I attempt this as I have other projects in front of this and the tractor still works (though it is hobbled without front wheel drive).

Did you engage 4wd before doing the above?
Regardless, before you tear out anything get a service manual as stated in post #3, and look at how it's setup.
It's a bigger job than baiting a mouse trap, and smaller than building a skyscraper.....:confused3:
Depends on person, skill level, experience, right parts and what's wrong.....
