Does anyone have a recommended operating RPM for the diesel engine in a CK20/HST? I've been told it's better to operate the engine at 2,600 rpm + (the pto indicator on rpm gauge) even though I am not bushhoging and don't need the power.

I only use what RPM's I need to get the work done, no point in wasting gas and engine hours.
The only "minimum" really is if you have an HST transmission and that is 2,000 but really that should be the minimum for any work. I use 2,000-2,200 for backhoe work, 2,200-2,800 for snow blowing and loader work, and around 2,800 for any ground engaging work with the box blade.

If you can bush hog without lugging the motor at less than 2,600 then do it, as long as your not stalling or overloading it. I've never mowed with mine so can't comment on ideal RPM's.

Thanks guys - I figured I had to keep my RPM up with the HST.

I am a dealer and DMace is exactly right. It is recommended that you should not operate the hydraulics on the tractor any less than 2000 RPM. The more RPM, the more hydraulic flow which will give you more umph. I go along with DMace on this. If you can get it done with less RPM, than do it, but just do not work the hydraulics less than 2000.

The charge pump on the HSt needs 2000 rpm to properly charge the hydrostatic transmission at 90psi. If you are not operating the hydrostat, like backhoe work, 1800 rpm supplies enough flow to operate the hoe smoothly.

There shouldn't be any reason to have to run the engine above pto speed. The engine torques out at about 2200rpm, and reached maximum horsepower at around 2800 rpm.
