Chipper/Shredder

I have a Sears chipper/shredder powered by an 8.5HP Techumseh. I have trouble starting it. I guess I just don't have what it takes in the "behind" to pull it over fast/hard enough. This is not a new problem, been that way since new. The Tecumseh model has an electric starter you could add, but not if the chipper is there. The chipper chute will block the spot where the starter would go.
I remember seeing an add-on to the recoil starter, years ago, where you chucked up a heavy duty 1/2" drill and turned it over from that. Does anything like that still exist?

I think Northern Tool catalog still has them, but with 8.5 hp, and the weight of the flywheel in the chipper, i don't know what kind of drill you would use that would be that strong and then would you be strong enough to hold it?

It should not be that hard to start. Is it new enough to have electronic ignition? If not....converting it over is cheap and easy and well worth it.

It's about 2 years old. The problem is turning it over fast enough to get it to hit since it's a direct drive. That flywheel in there is heavy /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Inspector507..... I had a similar problem with mine (9hp tecumseh) sears chipper/shredder. Wound up taking the carb off and cleaning real good, expecially all air bleed holes. Cranks on first pull everytime.

I found that a couple of simple things after you use it makes it start much better the next time.

My end use sequence is this:

Power down/shut off,
Close the Gas line shutoff valve,
Pull it over 4 or 5 times

When I start it the next time, open gas line shutoff valve, choke, and pull it over. Seems to start on 1st or 2nd pull.

I am not sure if it is because it is generally sporatic use and the gas in the carb loses some of it ump but this seems to work like a charm.

I also do this same sequence on all my small engine tools. Exception only being some do not have shutoff valve for the fuel line.

Something to try at least. Hope it helps.
