Hi, ya’ll
New member here.
Need some advice on first time tractor purchase.
Looking for cheapest options to mow 3.5 acre field and plowing/tilling about an acre.
Was looking at atv implements, but really don’t wanna drop the money and not be totally satisfied, then end up buying a tractor anyways lol.
Newbie...thanks in advance for any suggestions.

You should probably be on the lookout for something used.
Also, frequently first time tractor buyers start too small, and need to sell to upgrade.
Craigslist can be be a useful source.
If you enter your general location in your profile, perhaps someone here on TBN may be aware of something in your local area.

Mowing you could do with anything, lawn or garden tractor. Depending on your land, soil etc, you could possibly even plow and till with a garden tractor. That would be your *cheapest* option.

Welcome to TBN.. But here we like to spend your money so get ready for all the responses.. We will have you in a 75 hp tractor by the end of this thread.... But what GeneV said would be good ...

One thing I learned when spending taxpayer's money a few decades back, 'cheapest option' isn't always the best value.

There are a number of brands out there, but at least some are made by the same companies with different color paint and names.

Mowing with a SCUT isn't all it's cracked up to be. They're heavy, don't always turn well around obstacles and aren't real fast. Plowing or tilling an acre can be done, but again, not real fast.

Expect to be in the $15,000.00 range at a minimum for a new machine and implements.

All true, we DO like to spend your money haha, and also there's cheapest option and then there's wisest option. But yeh, if money tight, you gotta do what you gotta do. I got by with a garden tractor for a while. If you go that route, you want at least something with a locking differential (if you buy new, you're probably gonna be in the $3000ish range for that, not including implements), you wanna fill you tires, you're probably gonna need chains too.

Are you plowing and tilling only "once-and-done", or are you planning on plowing and tilling every year?

If once and done, maybe hire a neighbor to do it the one time, then just buy something you can mow with.

Rough pasture cutting to just knock down weeds and brush a couple times a year, or are we going for a nice looking lawn or park like finish in this pasture area?

Flat, level, smooth open ground, or rough, hilly, with tons of trees and obstacles?

Plowing and tilling once every year.

Rough pasture cutting a few times a year.

All areas are on a hillside, but relative smooth ground, 5 or 6 trees
