I have had this intermittent problem with my 1850. The lift tilt dump and steering would conk out. Just would not run at all. I called Terry and he said it was the charging valve and we should replace it. It took about 3 hours all in with me being meticulous. Lots of brake cleaner as everything was soaked in oil.

Here is a pix of both sitting on the tire

What does a charging valve do? I don't think my 422 has one.

Hi Carl,

Did it solve the problem? I had a problem with my bucket dropping suddenly. Ended up being leaking seals in the steering cylinders which have priority. But it was an intermittent problem.

So far it appears fixed but it was intermittent. It had sort of stopped the week before I replaced it.

I had to replace the steering valve altogether in the beginning of ownership. Interesting how it is tied directly to the lift circuit. Sometimes I wonder what PT is up to in the design world.

Will know more in a few months when I am using it more heavily

Accumulator charging valves is what charges the accumulator.

Accumulator charging valves or pressure shut-off valves assume the function of keeping a pressure level in an accumulator circuit within certain limit values (cut-in pressure, cut-out
pressure). The switching pressure differential is approx. 18 %
of the cut-off pressure.

Dear Bob,

On the tractors with automatic brakes, the charging valve serves as a trip valve and an accumulator. The valve contains an accumulator to absorb the variance in the hydraulic pressure to keep the brake pressure up (i.e. off), and as long as the pressure is up, to bypass the full flow with minimum pressure drop to the steering and auxiliary. The trip pressure is supposedly about 600psi.

I think it is only on the XX45, XX50 tractors.

Because the valve cycles every time the brakes are applied, or the tractor is turned off, the stem of the trip valve tends to weep oil after awhile. I am on my third one, but we are often off and on the tractor, cycling the brakes.

I hope this helps.

All the best,

Peter

I think you are correct that only the larger units with the brake tender have that valve.

Dear MR,

I agree, it is on the bigger units, but it gets complicated. The 1445/2445 don't have the brake tender, but they do have the charging valve. Go figure.

All the best,

Peter
