I have Ag tires on my TC 29D. I have recently planted two 10 acre prairies and need to mow and so forth without disturbing the delicate root beds. I am thinking of changing to Turf tires. In looking at the owner's manual, the rim diameter is the same on the fronts. But the rear rim size changes from 11.2-24 to 13.6-16, a big difference. I seems to me that would require changes in the 4WD transmission. Has anyone done this. Is there a simple way to use the existing rims and just put turf tires on them without changing the gearing. For some reason my dealer could not answer these questions and referred me to the local tractor tire company. Any help is much appreciated.

If it is 4wd, you will have to change the wheels and tires.
It won't hurt the roots beds enough to where you will even be able to tell. Farmers have been using R-1s for all types of field work for about about 60-70 years including grass seeding.

It is my impression that the ratio of the external sizes of the tires(front to back) needs to be precisely what the transmission is expecting. I don't think there is a way to internally change the internal gear ratio.

When they select the type of tire when new, they have a completely different rim and tire.

theres a big difference in rolling circumference between 11.2-24 ag's and 13.6-16 turfs! if you poke around the Titan® 2006 Tire catalog site for both tire sizes in R1 and R3 rolling circumferences you'll see what I mean.. good luck .. tim

Forteatwo,

First welcome to TBN. Looks like your first post. This is something I dug around quite a bit as I have a TC29D also. I have the R4's and am very happy with them as I think they are a more of an all around tire. Not great at any one thing but does a pretty good job at all. I hope I am saying that all right.

Anyway you have to change out the rims also. You have to keep the front ration the same as the back or you will start ripping up the drive line.

Welcome to TBN :D! I have a TC 29DA with weighted
R-1's. They will chew up the "lawn" when it is wet and I am in 4WD (MFWD). I have not noticed any real damage to the root systems when I am using this tractor in 4WD. I try to make my turns wider. I agree with all the posts as to rim size and rolling circumference. If your tires are not weighted I do not think you should have a problem with root structure damage. I will say that compaction will be a problem if you keep running over the same place. Jay

You'll need rims & tires. Call around to your local dealers - they may have some "takeoffs" setting around. I picked up a set of turfs for my TC18 at about 50% off retail. Dealer had them "out back". My original equipment R4s were tearing up my lawn...

If you need to go new, be prepared to open your wallet - a set of wheels & tires is likely north of $1,000. Probably something you want to get thru wholegoods aka your salesman (as a set of 4) vs. parts (as 4 different parts)...

Your chances are best in the direction you going, for finding used tires and rims when changing from R1 to R3 (Turf). If you cant find them used expect to pay about $750 per rim less tire in the spare parts market. Check out Messick parts online and you can get an estimate.

I would do some checking around with various dealers. Like Hazmat said a dealer may have a set just sitting in the back room he wants to get rid of.

My dad did this for his L3000 Kubota about a year or so ago. He had to buy all new also. He only paid $975 for all 4 rims and tires so it wasn't too bad in my estimation.

I looked a Messicks online parts catalog and TC29 rims are not that bad
Rear = $267 Ea.
Frnt = $83 Ea.
After seeing those prices for TC29 I just had to check the price for 2120 too see if they had lowered them since I last checked. Nope!
2120
Rear = $870 Ea
Rear Center Disk = $350 Ea
Frnt = $260 Ea.
