I just came across an old mortar mixer cheap but it doesn't have an engine on it. I was wondering if I could convert it over to an electric motor. I have a 5Hp electric motor I could use. The only problem is that the motor is 3 phase which I don't have but was thinking about building a phase converter out of another electric motor I have to run the mixer motor.

I know it sounds like a lot of trouble to do this but I have these electric motors and I don't have a gas motor with gear reduction on it. I was just wondering if anyone else has ever done this before and if so how did you gear the electric motor and in the end how did it work out?

should work, the three phase motor on a static converter is about 2/3'S of plate rated power.

the static converter energies the third winding to act like a starter winding and then the motor runs on the other two windings,

I ran a lot of shop tools on static and rotary converters until I got three phase,

since the mixer should not need to be started under load, the static converter should work, if you plan on starting it under load then a rotary converter should be used, (the converter needs to sized to the motor ran,

Yeah, that's what I was planing and hopefully once I get it spinning the paddles it will keep going until the batch is done then shut off, clean out then start over. I need to check what the motor RPM's are to see how much I need to slow it down or speed it up. I guess I can do that with pulley size to make my own gear reduction.

I guess I could do that with a gas motor too but everybody I have talked to says I have to have a engine with a gear reduction drive on it to get it to work right.

You could even make it reversing so the internal paddles push the mix out.

Yes that is an option of-course but I hate to buy a new engine for something like this. I already have the 2 motors so why not use them. Have you tried to sell anything like that these days. I had these and a bunch of other stuff on Chaig's list for months and all I got was ten thousand calls from people that wanted to do me a favor and take them off my hands so I didn't have to haul them to the dump. On top of that I got my account high jacked and before it was all over I ended up with to viruses and almost lost my whole computer. In the past I have sold and bought a lot of stuff on there but it's gotten really bad with all the scams people run on there.

I'm not saying I never would buy one of those motors on it I would rather use what I have.

sorry.

I recently got a 10 horse 3ph 230 1750 motor running on 1ph. I used a total of 220 uf run caps and 900 uf start caps from one hot leg to the open leg. The start caps are hooked thru a potential relay (6X560). Grainger has it on clearance sale. It takes about a second to reach full speed and runs smooth and quiet. With a 5 horse motor you only need half the caps. I bought the run caps at Surplus Center.

It's running a large car alternator that I'm using as a dc welder. Works very well.

Why not make it PTO powered and run it off your tractor?
