Chains and how they are made

Yep, those machines a fascinating to watch and most of the ones that I have seen seem to be old, probably made in the '40's to '60's.

Facinating. I always wondered how chain was welded. I am surprised that the short link, still allows enough current to flow without effectively just shorting out the link.

Also, the induction heating is quite amazing.

It's not rocket science and yet the men that thought of, and built these machines, are to be admired. Unlike so many, that have contributed nothing (or, very, very little) to our world.

It is pretty darn amazing isn't it? I thought it pretty neat as well.

While I haven't made the actual links I have heavily modified a set to fit my tractor rears.
I cut links, twisted them open to fit pieces together and then stick welded the cut links closed.
I did purchase the shaped 'hooks' to attach the crosses to the sides and closed the 'hooks' in my vice.
All my crosses are studded ice chain and they are at every 3'd side link.
Was a tedious job, took quite a few hours but well worth the effort.

None of my welded splices ever let go. (about 1/4 of the crosses have welds)
Having chewed ruts in hard ice is a rather good test of my welds. LOL

The link welding was tricky as I needed to grip the links in vice grips and then grip the vice grips in the ground clamp.

What helped greatly was that I had the tool to open the side hooks.

Thanks, that was amazing.

This is a great video of how chains are made. I have made some chain myself, and it was not this easy.:)

here is my thread of how I made some simple chain.

I watch a show called How It's Made.. They had a show not long ago showing how chain is made & the different process for the different grades of chain

It's really cool that someone comes up with the ideas to make the machines, that make all the things we use

Modern Mavels did an episode a few years ago on ropes and chains. I was glued to the chair for an hour!
