Caulk / sealant compatible w/ Rustoleum?

I made some heavy duty legs for a landing awhile back, slathered the whole thing with Rustoleum. Turned out great. But what I did was set the legs onto some metal plates to distribute the weight rather then bother welding a constant bead. I'm getting just enough moisture in the legs that wants to seep through on top of the plate and leave a rusty trail. I'll need to clean the rust off with something when the weather is dry, use some sort of caulk or seam sealer that is easy to apply and hit it with the Rustoleum when dry. Anyone have a recommendation on what will wash the rust off the paint and what I should seal this with?

Not sure I fully understand your problem. If you are getting moisture inside your tubing sealing at the base will only make another problem if water can accumulate. Seen where tubing has deformed or split by water accumulation.
If I can seal tubing by continuous welding I do. If I can’t, piece has a bolt connection where water might wick thru, or other opening then must have a drain.
Vulkem is my preferred sealant for metal.

I understand your thoughts, though the tubing is 1/4" thick and with our mild weather, splitting or water accumulation wouldn't be a problem. In some spots hopefully I can seal the top, but it will be hard to get at. Vulkem could be a good match. Thank you.

One time I wanted to paint caulking and read instructions on tubes before choosing one. They might still be putting that on tube instructions.

This Spring I used Rustoleum 2x rattle can on PVC and over their zinc/alum primer on galv duct. Seems pretty benign. If a caulk is fully cured maybe it wouldn't mess with paint it was under or over.

Quarter inch wall ought to last all right...

I'd use pure silicone. Might even go for something special like Dow Corning #3145 (it's a moisture curing type) - or one of the marine silicone sealers that can be used in the wet.

Are you going to leave a vent hole in each leg?

Renewed interest in the post. Followed Smokeydog's advice, laid a nice little bead of Vulkem , let it sit for 2 weeks or so and touched it up. Looks great. The tops are mostly open. Some flanges were welded up top.

Urethane sealant is my choice for all "sealant" applications. Clean any rust off first where the sealant goes. Silicon will peel out over time, does not bond to non-porus surfaces well. Makes a great gasket between mechanically fastened parts.
