Since they have the Cat name I am going to assume they are decent machines. I am curious though from you guys who may have experience with them what you think of them. I am finally able to buy as a mini excavator has finally came to the top of my list of next purchase. I have been looking locally and checking online for a decent 4 ton unit with cab. I have seen more and more Cat minis online and I was curious as to if they built them or if their rebadged and how good they are.

I am trying to stick with the brands I know and can get parts for so I am concentrating on Komatsu, Cat, Bobcat, Kubota and even New holland as I have a NH construction dealer fairly close.

Ive only operated one cat mini ex, and it is a NICE machine. very strong digger. Cant tell you if its renamed fro another manufacturer or not.

Mostly i use Kubota excavators, and i have NEVER had a single issue with them. They are a great machine.

Cat has entered into multiple agreements with Yuchai in the past several years. Wouldn't surprise me if they were built by Yuchai, which already has a pretty good name in excavators.

I had always been told that (at least the older) Cat mini ex's were built by Mitsubishi for Cat. I just found the following on Mitsubishi's Public Affairs Committee webpage dated 2002. I think the very earliest CAT mini ex's were total Mitsubishi design/components but it looks like they were doing some 50/50 partnership work shortly after that. Who knows what it is today......

""The CAT brand appeared for the first time on an important product line this February. Shin Caterpillar Mitsubishi began supplying mini hydraulic excavators to Japanese customers under that brand.
In Japan, Shin Caterpillar Mitsubishi formerly marketed mini excavators- less than six tons-under the Mitsubishi brand and larger excavators under Caterpillar's CAT brand. It now will begin selling its mini excavators under the CAT brand, too, starting with the model launched in February.
Shin Caterpillar Mitsubishi's new mini excavator also is important for another reason. It features a so-called compact radius. The cab-and-engine unit, in other words, has a diameter smaller than the width and length of the crawler unit beneath. On conventional excavators, the back end of the cab-and-engine unit projects beyond the crawler unit. That makes the excavators less nimble in tight spaces. Shin Caterpillar Mitsubishi's compact radius excavators handle work that would be next to impossible with other kinds of equipment.
"Most important," emphasizes Izuru Morita, who heads the mini excavator development program at Shin Caterpillar Mitsubishi, "is the quality of the excavators. These little units are a lot less expensive than our big machines. But we have equipped them with state-of-the-art features for maximizing safety, optimizing performance, and ensuring reliability."
Thinking Globally
Mini hydraulic excavators long were a Japanese curiosity, like bonsai gardening. Construction companies employed the little diggers in the tight spaces of Japan's cityscapes. Recently, demand for mini excavators has been surging in Europe and North America as users have recognized the economy and versatility of the smaller equipment.
Shin Caterpillar Mitsubishi, a 50:50 joint venture between Caterpillar and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, has developed and manufactured mini excavators since 1995. It has licensed mini excavator technology to a Caterpillar company for U.K. production since 1997 and also began exporting some models last year.""

Why not a Deere? Deere makes a fine mini ex. One of, if not, the best IMO.

I thought all the Deere excavators where repained Hitachi's that they took out the Isuzu engine and put in the Deere engine. Does Deere make an excavator of their own?

Deere rebadges an aweful lot fo their stuff. Excavators, dumpt trucks and their bigger dozers.

Tekushi is supposed to be really good, but for the smaller excavators, Bobcat sure has a big following. I'd price those parts on a Cat and compare them to the others. I've heard stories of electronics quiting and costing over a grand to replace. That might be true with all of them too.

Is a 4 ton machine on rubber tracks or metal? Does it have a blade? Didn't your dad buy one a few years ago? How big was that and why get another?

Deere and Hitachi build their excavators in a joint plant.

Show me a full line equipment company that doesn't rebadge to a certain degree.

Don't you mean Takeuchi?

My brother had a brand new cat mini ex that was constantly overheating. Nobody could make it right. Sold it a year later. The kubota machines are amazing.

I am also considering Deere, I didn't intentionally leave their name out, just forgot to type it.
