Got a 87 d3b dozer. All 4 cylinders on the blade are leaking a little bit. Some more than others. This something a man could so hiself with the right kit? Or just worth money to take off cylinders and take them to a shop? How much money? Any help is appreciated.

I have an 86 931B loader. The seal kit for the stick cylinder on the backhoe was about $75. If the cylinder is in otherwise good shape, it shouldn't be too much to have it done. You could do it yourself but you'd have to find out the torque for bolt that holds the piston on. Apparently my cylinder had a very slight bend in it and they charged for straightening, honing and polishing, in addition to threading the end for a bigger bolt cause the original pulled out and took half the threads with it. It cost me about $1300 by the time it was done. Just to put a seal kit in should be much cheaper, maybe around $300 but that's just a guess. Go to a hyd. shop and ask for an estimate so you don't get sticker shock. If you do it yourself, Cat probably has a procedure they could print for you. Always use oil when installing cylinder seals.

Thanks a lot. I'll probably go to a local shop and get an estimate. Probably be my best bet

I rebuilt the stabilizer cylinder of my backhoe... It's about 4 inch diameter x 30 long with a 2 inch rod.
The actual rebuilding is relatively easy... getting it apart is a bear. The bolt/nut on the piston is very large and put on to stay on. The cylinder shop has the tooling and power bench to open it. Cost me $100 well worth it. Don't hurt yourself... take them to a shop.

Cat had a special a couple of years ago and quoted $250 per cylinder for a straight rebuild... so $1,250 to get the 5 done on my D3... I did not have any problem with the ripper so I left it alone.

Thanks a lot y'all. Very helpful. I'm gonna call my cat dealer and local hydraulic shop and get a price from both. I don't think I want to tackle this on my own

It is very easy to do unless the rod gland is frozen. Angle cylinders are CT-7x27 52 and the lift if they are a 3.5 bore, it is the same kit. if the lifts are 4.0 the kit is CT-7x27 38. I believe the kits are Martin fluid power kits. Way cheaper than Cat. This info is from my 84 D3B so check to verify before you do this. CJ
