I bought a new Cub Cadet, it has 24 hrs on it and I am thinking about useing Castrol Sytech in it. The manual on the Kholer engine says to use 10w30, will the synthetic oil be ok for this engine?

I use nothing but synthetic oil in all my air cooled engines.

30w in my 16hp generator
10w30 in my 20hp kholer lawn tractor, 7.5hp pressure washer,5hp lawn mower.

I used to have a lifter noise (tick) on a cold morning start up on my 20hp kholer tractor. After talking to a few small engine techs they said this was normal of a Kohler motor when mounted in a horizontal position like in a lawn tractor. They said the lifters bleed down so at startup they’re a little dry of oil. When I switched to synthetic oil problem solved.

I would think it would be really good for this type engine. My only concern is that it might need a little more break in time before changing.

Thanks for the responses, I was wondering about the break in period also. How many hrs do you guys think would be enough? One other question, I use gunk engine flush in my car and truck engines prior to oil change, we have a ford escort with 300 thousnd miles on it and I asways flushed it. When we had to put a new head gasket on it the machanic told me that he had never seen the inside of a engine so clean, he said it looks like it only had 10 thousand miles on it, compressin is still great he said. Would it hurt to add a little engine flush to my Kholer command prior to oil change in it?

I wanted till my first oil change to switch. As far as the engine flush I couldn’t tell you because I have never used it before. Do I think it might be a little over kill, maybe but I can’t argue that point? would it hurt anything, no. But I will say it’s all about peace of mind and you have had good luck with it. So it’s up to you.

You may want to wait until the break-in period has been reached before switching to a fully synthetic oil or you might notice a blue puff of smoke when you first crank the engine.

I have a 27 hp Kohler Pro and after the first 50 hours switched to Mobil-1 10W30 Synthetic and installed a Mobile-1 Oil Filter. 150 hours and no problems so far. I also installed an oil cooler to help with the heat. It's supposed to lower the oil temp by 40 degrees.

CarlGlas, were did you purchase the oil cooler? Was it a universal kit? Also do you have a picture of it. I was thinking of adding one to my generator.
