Just bought a used Case DX24E CUT.

I'm going through and replacing all filters and fluids as I always do when I buy a piece of used equipment. (The last guy says he maintained it well, and I believe him, but I'm still to **** retentive to not do it)

Anyway,

the manufacturer specs Hy-tran ultra for the combo tranny/hydraulic oil.

I am going full synthetic on all oils. The only oil I've been able to find that will meet this spec is a Chevron synthetic that they'll be happy to ship me in 55 gallon barrels (no thanks).

Anybody know any alternatives?

What's everyone's experience with synthetic greases....any recommendations there?

Thanks in advance

I assume you are saying that it has to meet the MS-1209 spec and be a full Synthetic?

The Texaco TDH meets that spec (with some discussion from the competition as the Shell version of TDH does not) but it is not synthetic.

I am usually just trying to meet spec, and have not hunted for a full synth in that spec, I will say that, that particular spec can be a bugger.

If it were mine, I would be hard pressed to understand why a NH 134 type product or Kubota UDT spec meeting product would not do what you need (those specs should be available full synthetic from a variety of sources)

I think (probably wrong) that your Case would be a kissing cousin, if not a sister to a NH. I find it difficult to believe that they would use different materials in the major components that would be effected by the difference in oil.

Diesel power may have something in the TRC line that meets. I will be interested to hear.

Yes, I'm trying to meet the MS-1209 spec with a full synthetic.

My tractor is identical (red paint v. blue paint plus different hood) to the new holland product, so if anyone knows a synthetic that meets their specs I'd be willing to use that.

Thanks!

I called amsoil (they make synthetics) and here's what they said:

Thank you for contacting AMSOIL with your concerns,

In response to your inquiry, Case MS-1209 is the specification for Case Hy-Tran Ultra fluid, which can be used both in the hydraulic/transmission system and in the engine as well. Our Synthetic Tractor Hydraulic/Transmission Fluid (product code ATH) can be used to replace this product in the hydraulic/transmission system, but not in the engine. That is why the MS-1209 spec is not listed on our product.

Thank you again for the opportunity to respond to your concerns. As always, please feel free to contact us again if we can be of further assistance.

Sincerely,

AMSOIL Technical Services

Any comments?

The oil in question is a good oil and for nearly any make tractor it would be an improvement over the manufacturers recommendation!

I don't know your location but most oils in compacts will need to be changed per year then by hours! I'm not saying they son't ever make it to the hours before time but often they may still need to be changed because of condensation.

Thanks Art,

It looks like the hydraulic fluid hasn't been changed since the 50 hour point on a 3 year old tractor with 250 hours on it.

While the manufacturer's recommendation is to change it every 300 hours, I have a hard time believing I shouldn't change it. I believe in synthetics, and I'm just trying to do the right thing (for the tractor)

Here in the northeast with the climate changes it often adds moisture faster then the oil changes can remove it! I like good oils and have no problem with spending or recommending more if they a warranted but sometimes the oils life will never be expended before the moisture level will demand a change.

I also like to justify my expenses and like I said, you might not find any advantage to the synthetics for the dollars spent.

Is this a commonly accepted rule of thumb? (1 year per hydraulic oil?)

I live in colorado above 7500' and I guess I don't see how that much moisture is going to get into the oil. (average humidity is about 20%).

Is there a tester or something that I can see what the moisture level is in the oil?

Thanks

Rule of thumb is typically 1 year or 500 hours for hydraulic oil. My take on that "rule" is that it makes it easy to remember to do it. I've seen a lot of old machines with inches thick layer of goo in the bottom of sumps. That wouldn't have formed had the oil been changed!

If you would rather go the 500 hours, just be sure that you don't go longer than 3 years. (Again - completely arbitrary time frame, but you have to change it some time!)

I also agree that changing all fluids on a used machine is smart smart smart!

Any specefic reason you want a full synthetic UTF oil?

As for how often to change the oil I would suggest you perform UOA's and use them as a guideline for change intervals. If the oil is not contaminated, wear metals are within limits and the condition of the base oil and additive package are fine there is no reason to change it. I hate to think how many millions of gallons of oil get drained every year in this country that don't really need to be changed.
