Does anyone know what's in this additive? I'm changing out the hydraulic oil in my 1998 Case 1840XT and the manual calls for 10W-30 motor oil with a C API rating with a quart of HTO additive per 5 gallons of oil. I'm no where near a Case dealer so I was seeking alternatives. Obviously I know I could have it shipped but the lack of information on the web about this additive has peaked my interest. I'm by no means an "oil guy" so I'm seeking out any info that's available from TBN users. I did contact Schaffer Oil and they said I'd have no problem using their 315 as a replacement. I ask the tech what was in the HTO additive and he played it off as a marketing gimmick. Not sure I'd go that far, but I would like to know why use a motor oil with an additive instead of a high quality hydraulic / trans oil? If it's the viscosity range, wouldn't a synthetic offer better operating temperature range? The other thing I came across was it contained zinc to help lubricate the type of drive motors used (orbital motors?). Wouldn't a hydraulic / trans oil contain this? Any info would be appreciated.

HTO is designed to provide additional antiwear, oxidation and corrosion-inhibiting properties. It extends component life in Case skid steer hydrostatic transmissions for Case Uni-Loader models 1818, 1825, 1835, 1835B, 1835C, 1838, 1840, 1845C, 40XT, 60XT, 70XT, 75XT and 85XT.

You have probably already read this. It states the properties in general but Case has so many hydraulic oils already that would seem to do the job as well or better than mixing an additive to 10W-30 engine oil. That is not to say that engine oil is a bad hydraulic fluid - my experience has been, from the engineering side, that top quality engine oils make great hydraulic oils but they are expensive in that they have additives not needed in a hydraulic system - but won't hurt. I don't agree with the Shaeffers statement about marketing hype but I would agree that their oil recommendation will do the job.

If you look at the Case hydraulic oil specs like M3505 or M3525 they talk about all the same wonderful things that this HTO additive package does. Makes you wonder if their skid steer people don't talk with the rest of the company. Having worked in engineering for Case IH 20 years ago I would not be surprised because back then agricultural and construction people didn't communicate well at all.

Case has used ATF, HyTrans, and engine motor oil 10W 40 with case additives, etc.

Case HTO oil additive is designed exclusively to provide
for proper life of the hydrostatic components. Directions
for mixing HTO and Engine Oil (1818, 1825, 1835,
1835B, 1835C, 1840 and 1845C - after P.I.N.
JAF0067438) are listed on the container label. This mixture
must be added each time replacement or additional
oil is needed.
Case HTO is approved for use in 1830, 1845 and 1845B
Uni-Loader Hydrostatic Transmissions only and is
required to be used in 1818, 1825, 1835, 1835B, 1835C,
1840 and 1845C (after P.I.N. JAF0067438) Uni-Loader
Hydraulic and Hydrostatic Transmission Systems.

Our Power-Tracs have used 10W-40 for over 20 years with no apparent troubles.
