case 830 comfort king

Hello all. Hope this is on the right place. I have a friend who might sell a case 830 comfort king at a good price. Don't know yet if it's a case o matic or not. It's a diesel. Wondering how good a field tractor it is. How much impairment will it pull? How good on fuel? Is it a comfortable ride? Is it enough improvement over my 574 ih to be with it?

You do have more horsepower as well as weight. We don't now if it would be an improvement as we don't know what you are doing with it.

Field work. Cutting land, pulling field cultivator, planting. Things like that. The 574 is a great utility tractor. And I'll probably keep using it for hay. Well I'll probably use both for hay. Less hooking and unhooking.

The Comfort Kings are not Case-o-matics. They used the proven clutch/pressure plate set up, it should have a 3point hitch instead of the Eagle Hitch, they were made up till about '69. 301 cid non turbo 4 cylinder engine. They use the same pistons, rods, sleeves, rings as a 1030 Comfort King (it just had 2 more cylinders). The weak points of these engines were cracked heads, 4 cylinder was double heads, 6 cylinder was triple head. Also if someones "trained monkeys" have worked on it it is very easy to screw up the O-rings on the bottom of the sleeves, (results in water in oil) and head gaskets are two piece and have a "firing ring" that sets in the gasket and can be installed up side down. Which will give the symtoms of a blown head gasket. The 830 should turn 65HP and maybe a fuzz more if someone has "twisted on it". Mine will pull 3- 14" 3-16" plows in Baxter/Chriter clay soils , a 12' Tuff line disk, or a 1000-1200lb belt baler. She is a bit light on the front, and the brakes leave a lot to be desired. But it can easily be a 8000lb tractor. I would not give more than $5k for one in excellent shape unless I really knew it. If the price is right buy the 830 and use it for "heavier" work.

Thanks. How does it ride? It's a wide front, row crop. Must of my soils are fairly light. There are some heavier clay spots here and there. My 574 will pull an ih 420 3 16'' plow just fine through all but the "redest" land. It's a rough ride when you cross cut land on an angle though because of the short wheelbase. How much lift capacity with the three point? The tractor was my friends grandfather's, then a local farmer bought it for light chores. Had the motor rebuilt right before my friend bought it from him to tend a duck inpalement. He only used it a few years and has let some one else take it over and doesn't need it anymore.

Mine is a wide adjustable front, with big tires, 18.4 X 34 fluid filled on the rear. It rides fine, the long old hood looks like a aircraft landing strip. They are just a long, wide, tall, heavy tractor. Not very nimble, steering and brakes are not much by todays standards. It looks to be about 10 more horse than the 574 and 2000lb heavier. I would pick the 830 over the 574 to round bale, bush hog, plow, disk, plant or anything else were a little more HP and weight is a plus. I would pick the 574 to mow hay, rake, tedder, cultivate or other chores around the farm were a low,nimble tractor is better suited, like post hole digger or driver. Hope I've been helpful.

Thanks soggy bottom outdoors. I asked my friend if it was a comfortable ride. He said no, but he's never ran anything older than a 4430 jd. Its the only tractor he's ran without a cab. Thanks again for the info.

I have a 830 ... propane burner. I bought it used and use it on the grinder mixer. Had to rebuild the PTO clutch and disc's ... cause the PTO started slipping. I agree with the other poster about the steering and brakes ... I do like the old girl and as far as ride around the farm yard too and from the pens to dump feed its a good ride. Wide front adjustable as well and the rears are filled.
