Case 580F
Hello,

Anyone familiar with this model? I own about 45 acres and need a machine for landscaping, digging for water and natural gas lines, and constructing a small pond(about 1/4 acre). Also have quite a few stumps to dig out. I had read that the 580F was made in Europe, the equivalent of the 580c. I'm close to pulling the trigger on this machine. The seller says it has about 3200 hrs, needs 3 of the hydraulic cylinders repacked and the replacement of a hose on the hoe, which by the way is sliding rather than center mounted. Seller is not sure of the year, thinks 1981. Price is $6500. I would hope most of the parts are interchangeable with 580C but can't find out much about this model on the net. I'm having a friend/mechanic go with me to check it out. I don't want to end up spending a bunch more on repairs. Any input would be appreciated.

never heard of that model. Is it an offset backhoe??? where the entire hoe can shift side to side. Ive only run one offset hoe, and loved it.

I have run alot of 580C's in the past, a great machine. But man is it a rocking horse when you go offroad. Such a heavy monster.

Yes, the hoe slides from side to side, which would be an advantage when working close to a wall. I think it would be great for digging foundations, but I don't plan on using it for that. I'd be using it exclusively on my property, which has lots of uneven and soft ground. It looks like a real beast, saw one on-line in action tearing up street asphalt, and it looked very powerful. I am a little worried about the size though. May be a little too big for the jobs I want to do.

Danny,

You are correct. The 580F was built in Europe. I don't think you're going to find many parts for it that are compatible with the 580C. I know the engine is completely different than a 580C. The 580C had a Case 188D, the 580F has what looks like a David Brown engine.

You can go to the Case Construction website and browse the parts manuals for the 580C and the 580F.

Thanks for your input. I'm taking a diesel mechanic friend to see it tomorrow, and we're bringing his lowboy. I went to the Case Construction website you mentioned and got some good info. This machine has been on the market for over a month and was reduced by $1000 recently. I'm not sure what's scaring people away, maybe unfamiliarity with the model. Or it might be because the seller wants cash only. Prices for a 580C in similar condition have been running 2-3 thousand more in my area.

It is a david brown engine . I had 580G's and they were awful underpowered lazy engines for commercial use but would be ok for a hobby farm or something.

Thanks for the info. I decided to pass on the machine after inspection. It was leaking hydraulic fluid copiously from both loader and backhoe cylinders,
the hour meter has been disconnected, and the sliding backhoe mechanism had been disabled. I'll keep looking, a smaller machine would be more useful for my purposes, except for the pond and stump removal. I'll hire out those jobs.

The sliding hoes are great though and very little to go wrong with them .

I sold my dynahoe 200-4 with a 4-71 Detroit 1970 that thing can dig down 20 ft. and dig stums like nothing, but it was too large and heavy for my 21 acres. The 140 dynahoe model is a smaller machine and very hard worker and price for those machine are low. Because the parts are hard to find. Good luck.
