Case 448 Removing engine to replace starter

Hello, my name is Ray. Does anyone know if I have to loosen the allen bolt in the love joy coupling to remove the 448 engine? I am trying to check and or replace starter. I have hooker jumper cables directly to the starter and the gear comes forward and attempts to turn engine but can't start it. The bendix gear does not retract either and if I turn the key I can see starter try to turn engine and it just makes a clicking sound each time I turn the key. I was able to get the gear to retract with a thin wrench and the flywheel would turn with help of a big screwdriver. It seemed to turn pretty hard considering I removed both spark plugs. Do I need to remove fan and linkage to get to starter?
