case 310 dozer diesel

i just picked up this machine
changed all the hoses and the blade is just the nutz. works great.
ran the machine yesterday for about 15 minutes and i lost forward motion. had some excessive smoke coming from the engine area.
backed it in to a spot and parked it.
then this am it fired right up and moves again .
any ideas, as this is my first dozer.

Do you have an exact model, or year of the dozer?

I assume you have a clutch on the engine, as well as two steering clutch/brakes.

My John Deere 440ic has a "reverser". A lever that you pull back to change it from 5 forward, 1 reverse to 4 reverse and 1 forward. Or, sends you in the opposite direction at the same speed you were previously traveling. Does the Case have something similar?

Anyway, a lot of things can smoke, but one thing that can get hot, smoke, and lose grip is a clutch, then when it cools down, it may seem to work again. However, that wouldn't fully explain why it might work in reverse, but not forward.

Do you feel extra drag when driving forward or in reverse?
