There is a project being planned, and major push back against, an effort to get a liquid carbon dioxide pipeline put in, with lines running all across Iowa. It's supposed to transport carbon dioxide from producers (like ethanol plants) and transport it to some underground "storage" facility, in Illinois i think... What happens there, I have no idea. Seems like a stupid idea to me: collecting this stuff with no plan on what to do with it later (sounds much like nuclear fuel storage).

There is talk of using "eminent domain" to get it pushed through areas/farms that don't sign on to the program. There is a lot of push back about using eminent domain for this, since it would be a private venture, instead of public i.e.: interstate highway.

It wouldn't be REAL close to me, but I don't want it either...

Any thoughts?

Why? It has many common and good uses.
[copied from article]
Uses of liquid carbon dioxide include the preservation of food, in fire extinguishers, and in commercial food processes. For food preservation, liquid carbon dioxide is used to refrigerate, preserve, store and soften. In a fire extinguisher, the CO2 is stored under pressure as a liquid to act as an anti-flammable. The liquid carbon dioxide not only reduces combustion by displacing oxygen, but also cools the burning surface to avoid further damage. Solvent extraction using compressed liquid CO2 can be used in industrial processes such as removing caffeine from coffee or improving the yield of olive oil production.

Liquid carbon dioxide is being considered as a means of CO2 transportation for underground or subsea storage purposes. Due to its high density as a liquid, it is much more feasible to ship than as a gas.

I've not seen any proposed "use" of the collected carbon dioxide - it just seems to be destined to be "stored", underground. From what I'm reading, most of the push back is due to the possible use of eminent domain.

It's imminent domain btw. :giggle: CO can be used to promote plant growth. Living plants convert CO into O2.

I'd rather that they'd quit putting ethanol in gas.

oops. my bad.

I believe that the intent is to inject the CO2 underground into the sandstone deposits in southern Illinois. The concept is that it would be permanent carbon dioxide sequestration.

Pipelines often (usually?) acquire underground rights by eminent domain once approved by a utilities commission. It isn't a random, "oh let's put a pipeline in where we want" thing; it does have to get approval. Part of the brouhaha is I think that Iowa wants to suspend or delay that mechanism.
I don't follow why some Iowans so wound up against it, as it would be a win for ethanol plants, corn growers, and county roads. NIMBY?

Iowa plants are better able than many ethanol plants to sell CO2 for food and industrial use, since large cities are "close", so they must be banking on carbon sequestration prices being even better. Regardless, a pipeline will save wear and tear on county roads for not having CO2 tankers hauling CO2 around.

I hope this helps,

Peter

People seem to be automatically against anything that they don't understand. I guess that is human nature.

It's the Not In My Backyard (NIMB) philosophy.

There could also be a large pile of cash for those willing to accept the pipe line.
In today’s world of crazy inflation and gas prices, the likes of which this country has never seen, it could be a life saver.
