On another forum in another country, I was asked why I was so cantankerous. The following is part of my reply, the remainder of it being pertinent to the particular thread.

Quote:- "I do not know why I am a member of COMA (Cantankerous Old Men's Association) but I am. There have always been huge numbers of us and perhaps it is simply part of the ageing process. I cannot think of anyone I have ever known who is/was not a Member. There are a few other members who post on this forum. Some are deniers of course, but ask their relatives. You must ask whilst the COM is still alive, because death (the only escape from COMA) transforms COMs into loveable old people that nobody criticises.

If we ever formed a more formal Association we would be unstoppable, but part of the problem with COMA is that COMs being COMs we are cantankerous with each other so cannot possibly reach a consensus on what to do.

There are a lesser number of CY(oung)Ms, but CYMs tend to die, often from heart attacks, in their 40s or early 50s I have known quite a lot, and so they never become COMs. Best to stay calm until you reach the appropriate age to become a COM. I noticed the first symptoms about 10 years ago, aged 60, when, instead of humouring or ignoring people, I began to tell them what I really thought. A few other people I know exhibited these symptoms first too. After that it is easy to become a fully-fledged COM and a member of the Association."

Are there any fellow COMs on TBN?

I have been told that I was always a COM even when young. I always considered that I was just giving an honest opinion rather than being cantankerous though. I think as one gets older he/she is just more likely to tell it like it is rather than pussyfoot around and worry about offending some person / group especially after one retires and not longer has to kiss up to his fellow workers any one of which could possibly be a future boss.

I don't know about being a COM, but I was a GOIB (Grumpy Ole Injured Bast@#d). There were several of us going through a review process for medical conditions before being retired medically from the Air National Guard. I made us a patch. I can't remember exactly what DAWG was. It had something to do with the working group (last two letters WG) that was kicking us out. BOHICA of course stands for Bend Over, Here It Comes Again.

sign me up TOO ...

so I can B*tch about the poor service, lack of respect, and the general state of the world ... no wait , I already do that:laughing:

COM usually grow into the role ... with lots of encouragement from self serving fools ...

the first symptoms occur with a spontaneous outburst when we finally reach our limit of tolerance .. the release is most enlightening ( and addictive ) ... soon we can't let a day go by without a repeat performance ....

I'm almost there ... soon I'll be shaking my fist at the young kids running across my lawn and cussing at the planes that fly overhead occasionally . ;)

AKA GOM (Grumpy old men )

I've been in a few years. My first symptom was not giving a hoot wha' I say. Since I was a whippersnapper, I've had several courses in The Theory and Application of Old Men, so I'm well trained.

That's funny I was going to post about being a curmudgeon and not even 50 yet. I was in what used to be my favorite hardware store earlier, griping about how it used to be a hardware store when I was a kid, and how it's all corporate and screwed up now. They only stock the fast moving items and have done away with much of their bulk hardware so you have to buy pre-packaged quantities that never equal what you need. Then because they didn't have what I was looking for I had to go to a large chain auto parts store to get some ring terminals, which I hate because the **** kids don't know anything if you have to ask. Fortunately I was able to find what I needed without asking.

I wasn't old and cantankerous the first three or four thousand times I had to deal with the same stupid things. It was right after that.

I was going to join; but- although having the most practice at being irritable I'm also the most qualified- they wouldn't let me so - '*&( em, that's their loss.

Funny thing though, I just spent an hour grumbling about my what a piece of crap my broadband is, and wondering how much it will cost me to get out of the contract; and when I finally got on this is the first thing I found. Could it be a sign from God? :D

I bought a new pc and yesterday called our antivirus provider, that we have had for years, about transferring the antivirus from the old to the new pc. They wanted to check for compatibility so I let them snoop around my 1 day old pc. They said my new pc had already been hacked (with their antivirus protection) and wanted $150.00 to fix it before I could download their antivirus.

They got a bit of old and cantankerous.

The other nite we went to eat and ask for high chair for the grandson. Well they seated us in an overflow area, more of a storage area. I protested and the lady said there was no where else. Like I'm blind!! I'm the type that likes to keep an eye on what's going on. And I couldn't see anything. So we ate and got ready to leave. On the way out I told the woman that seated us I would have to get my eyes adjusted to the light after being in that dungeon. She said you will get used to it. So I says Well one good thing I sit down there farted the whole time and nobody but my wife complained. She was too shocked to say anything.

Can I be president of the club.

Instead of cantankerous, grumpy, curmudgeon, or irritable,
I'd like to think of myself as outspoken, opinionated, and direct. :D

Short answer, I'm in the club already.

I like to remind some of the younger ones that comment that they can only hope to make it to our age, we already survived theirs.

Don't get me wrong. I am not short tempered. But if you try to make me a caboose on a stupid train you will not fare very well.
