Help!
I drive a M7040. I had a BushHog 307 Mower attached to my tractor. When I went to take it off. I couldn't compress the collar on the end of the drive that attaches to the PTO. I even tried attaching a cable noose to the sleeve - attached to a chain-attached to a tree, and pulled the cable in two!
I have pulled that portion of the shaft out of the mower half and have it tied up on the back of my rig so I could at least use non-pto implements like my disc, but I have to figure out how to get that collar released. Any good ideas? It seems completely frozen - don't know why. I can't get a c-clamp on it either.
Dirt.

I believe we've seen this problem before. Any chance your PTO shaft is a bit too long? If so, its been pushed onto the tractor's pto shaft and peened a bit. This prevents it from coming off with normal axial force.

A crow bar might to release it. You really need the equivalent of "chuck wedges" to remove a chuck from a drill press or lathe. These are two wedges which fit on opposite sides of the shaft. When you pinch them together with a "C" clamp, they force the collar off.

My 9540 did the same thing bush hog 3008, I had to remove u-joint and pull yoke with a gear puller, the balls that are under sliding sleave had worn the tractor PTO shaft enough to hold yoke. I filed the burs off PTO shaft and gease the $#*! out of it, remove the PTO from bush hog and Grease it more often so far so good but i'll probably replace bush hog yoke with one thats more shaft friendly. Bush hog probably payed an engineer a lot of money so i would smash my fingers with that POS.

I cannot compress the collar with bare hands on mine either.
A pair of "slip jaw pliers" works for me.

I might have had the same problem, with my JD bushhog PTO, it started when the dealer tried to unhook the PTO shaft, took him about 1 hour to figure it out. I had problems several other times, then one day the collar on the end of the shaft, that you rotate to unhook the shaft, came off. I think, when one of my guys, went to pull away, the end of the shaft, caught something and the collar came off. From then on, I had to press in the plunger, to lock and unlock the shaft. I never had any problem after that.
Just a last suggestion, take a bar and knock the collar off the end, then you should be able to press in the plunger and remove the shaft, if its like the one I have.
Good Luck
