cant decide witch tractor

i am looking at a mf 1643 tractor and a kubota l4740 all that tractor will be doing is tilling a 20 acre garden and seeding it . i am wondering if i need the hst plus transmision kubota has i really like the 1643 hst
do you think i need the kubota L 4740 i know there is more hp but i only have a 5foot tiller whayt do u guys think

Tilling 20 acres?? Sheww, that seems like a lot for a 5 foot tiller. Why not, plow and disc it? Both tractors will handle your tiller fine, the HST+ will come in handy if the tractor bogs down in tough soil. If tilling is absolutely all you will be doing either will be fine, just choose which one you like best. Maybe your feeling on the dealer will also play a role in your decision.

That's a lot of garden!!! I would go with a Massey utility tractor around 50 hp with a geared transmission and at least a 6 foot tiller.
Since you don't mention snow save some jing and go with a 2wd model.
You should be able to find a used one in nice shape for about half the cost of a new one.
HST's are great for manuvering, which you won't be doing much of.
What are you planning on seeding?

If all you need to use is a 5 foot tiller, you dont need 47hp to do that. 30 hp will do fine. Most folks here say you need an HST to till with, but I would think that a good 12F/12R shuttle shift geared tractor would gear down plenty slow for that activity if you wanted to save $1500 or so. I just bought my first hydro, a B26 Kubota TLB but havent used it yet. Gear has always worked for me.

My son in law just bought a Kubota 2920 HST with a 5 foot tiller and he said it worked fine. I think they are about $14-15K for tractor. He got tractor, FEL, 60" tiller, 60" belly mower and tool bar with some plows for just above $20K. I did drive it with the mower and did a little FEL work. The HST was nice.

If you want to go with a 47 Hp tractor, you should look at trading in that 60" tiller for something 6 feet wide or more.

Before you go and buy anything, check out the Yanmar EX 3200 and compare it to the tractors you've listed above. For the past 40 years, I've owned various size and makes of tractors so when I recenly purchased an EX 3200 I was really surprised with the way it's built and the horsepower it has. We own a 50 acre farm that we lease out to a farmer who plants soybeans but I need a tractor to keep the outer edges of fields trimmed up and the EX 3200 does all I need it to do in a fuel efficient manner while pulling a 6ft mower. Plus, it costs a lot less than an orange, green, or blue tractor.
