Canola / Oil Seed Rape + Dogs

The fields around us are in full bloom, and the dogs love charginging around in it - and come back covered in the yellow pollen.

A neighbour suggested it is dangerous for dogs, though others say it is an old wive's tale.

Anyone got experiences one way or other?

I doubt that its going to harm them. Let them play & have fun.

The birds & bees are there all the time & it does not hurt them.

Thankfully, not only do I get on well with the farmer, but unless there are livestock grazing in the field, this is not a risk over here.

Allergies do not seem to be a problem, so far, thankfully - either for dogs or humans.

Biggest problem at the moment seems to be ticks - another subject entirely.

It depends on if the field is canola or rape. Rape is an industrial oil plant that is not edible. It has a high eucric (sp?) acid content, and so does the foliage. Canola has been bred to be edible, and is not poisonous.

"Rape (Brassica napus), a member of the mustard family, is listed in the Encyclopedia Britannica as a poisonous plant with toxic effects which include pulmonary emphysema, respiratory distress, anemia, constipation, irritability and blindness in cattle."
