Jan 2022 thought doing well for being 86. Quick biopsy and referred to Carti med center. Little Rock is 90, miles away. After the Lymph gland and Parotid gland were removed and the period of drainage. The doctor said tested clear of cancer. received a call from Chemo and Radiation Doctors that a small area under the ear remained possible could develop regrowth of cancer.
So now my question is have you had this type of surgery was Chemo necessary or just radiation of the area where the growth was removed.
reading that there are several side effects and age-related problems like six weeks of radiation and 6 series of Chemo. Using( Carboplatin)The main problem is Central neurotoxicity at risk of infection and to avoid crowds and people with colds.
Trying not to be long-winded. But if you have had this surgery could you give some problems you had. and really don't care to read heard of illnesses or situations of Cancer treatments.
As Joe, Friday used to say Just the Facts needed.
with half a million readers there must be several experiences.
Thanks.

Ken,
Every person I ever knew who went back just for a follow up radiation treatment is no longer living. The radiation can cause 'other' cancers or make the existing cancer thrive.
Add some herbs and spices to your life like Turmeric and Cayenne.

Wish you all the best. It's not an easy road to travel.

I don't have that experience, but you are in my thoughts and prayers Ken.

Wishing you the best as well. I would take whatever my oncologist suggested. Treatments evolve with new drugs and instruments, so last year's advice isn't always relevant today, and there are many nuances to tumor biology.

All the best,

Peter

Greetings Ken,
Though I did not have the same cancer as you I did have radiation treatment for stage 4 prostate cancer. I was offered several several treatment options and included in the options were 3 types of radiation treatments. I opted for radiation and chemo and have been cancer free for 6 or 7 years.
There is a lot of disinformation about radiation. Much is anecdotal, which is basically stories. Anecdotal information is very unreliable.
To help me decide I knew I would need to do some reading, and do it soon, of books about the science of radiation, not ask people about their stories and so on. Of the several books I read I found one that was particularly helpful. It explained in Layman's terms how radiation works and how it affects the body. Radiation effects can be counter intuitive, the book talks about this, and makes difficult concepts pretty easy to understand. I think you will probably find this book helpful if you read or listen to it. I say listen because it is also available in audiobook format. I not only read the book but also listened to it while doing chores. I checked it out from my local library. Please see the link below:

My opinion is to find the most qualified doctors that you believe in, and follow their advice.

Thanks for the information and will today be near a library so will look for the book. It is a lot like the comment" It all happened so fast. " 6 months ago no idea of cancer. Now a 3 ring binder of information. mostly not to use Chemo.

Yes, it does happen fast. I was getting yearly PSA tests for prostate cancer because my Dad got prostate cancer. So I get a good test and then a year later stage 4 cancer.
What do your oncologist(s) say about chemo? I went through 2 years of chemo and hormone therapy. Radiation and chemo and hormone therapy were, in my case, the best way to insure that a cancer that had spread would be wiped out. Since I am not a doctor I could only ask doctors, urologists and oncologists, what the best course of treatments would be. I am certain that because I followed their advice I am now cancer free. The chemo was not easy but I have seen plenty of folks go through worse.
If it might help or if you are interested I can tell you about a friend of mine who listened to everybody except medical doctors when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Though he is still alive now he has suffered greatly and in the end the only reason he is alive today is because he finally listened to actual competent advice from actual medical doctors.
I am not at all insinuating that you are not listening to competent advice from doctors and of course there are lots of reasons to listen to people other than doctors when treating an illness like cancer. Like how side affects (which my doctor said were affects, not "side effects") can affect a person. Or what to bring to read in waiting rooms, or how to deal politely with all the people who mean well who are constantly calling you or visiting you when all you want to do is try to sleep because you feel so shitty.
Sincerely,
Eric

I was a lot luckier than the OP and others. I had a lump on the left side of my cheek back in 2013. After many tests I ended up going to Univ of Penn Hospital in Philly. Top rated doctor and hospital. I had surgery, a superficial parotidectomy, for a tumor that was 5.7 x 4.1 x 3.6 cm. It is was a benign tumor (Warthin's tumor). Lucky that it was non-cancerous and also that I had minimal nerve damage, despite the fact that the facial nerve was encircled by the tumor. For me it all ended well.
